Energy Efficiency Code Compliance
The conditioned space of the residence includes the house interior,garage,and two attic spaces. The
attic is included in the conditioned space by use of rigid insulation and spray foam insulation applied in
the rafter space. The exterior envelope extends downward along all exterior walls, horizontally below
the floor of several overhangs on the West side of the building, and down to the foundation. The
envelope then extends below the heated concrete slab, enclosing the entire first floor including garage.

a. Flat Ceilings: None.
b. Vaulted Ceilings: Vaulted ceilings in the great room and vaulted ceilings in the attic area
are insulated to R-46 nominal using 2"XPS(R-10) placed against the bottom of the
upper flange of a wood I-joist, plus 5.5" Demilec HeatLok Soy 2Ib closed cell spray foam
sprayed below the XPS (R-36). The rigid insulation creates a 1" air gap between
insulation and roof decking that connects soffit vent to ridge vent. Assembly u-value
including air gap and thermal bridging effects is u-0.021 (R-47)
c. Conventional Wood Framed Walls: All exterior walls are 2x6 except front wall of great
room,which is 2x8. All cavity spaces in exterior walls to be filled with ClimatePro blown
loose fill insulation to an R value of R-22. Rim joists to be sprayed with Demilec HeatLok
Soy 2Ib closed cell spray foam to 1.2"for air sealing, plus R-21 batt insulation. Average
assembly u-value, including thermal bridging across all studs, posts, and headers, is u-
0.055 (R-18)
d. Underfloor: All underfloor cavities (attic and 2nd story overhangs on West side of
building)to be filled with loose fill blown insulation. 14"thickness under 2nd story
provides R-38 and 9.5" thickness under attic floor provides R-26.
e. Concrete slab: The heated concrete slab has 2" rigid XPS R-10 insulation below, and 1"
rigid XPS at slab edge to foundation wall. The foundation wall has an additional 2" XPS
R-10 contained within the wall as part of a concrete-insulation-concrete insulated
sandwich construction.
f. Windows: All operable windows are triple-pane u-0.21 with low-E coating except
window next to kitchen door which is double pane u-0.26 with low-E coating. All picture
windows are triple-pane u-0.19 with low-E coating except frosted window in master
bath,which is double pane u-0.27 with low-E coating. Double pane windows are due to
manufacturer requirement for size and tempered glass construction.
g. Doors: Two solid exterior doors are Therma-Tru smoothstar u-0.14. Four full-glazed
doors(two single and two double) are Therma-Tru smoothstar flush glaze u-0.30.
h. Garage door: We are requesting a code exception to use a non-NFRC rated garage door
as part of the building envelope. The garage door will be manufacturer rated to exceed
building code u-valule and air infiltration values. We are proposing an OverheadDoor
commercial garage door from the 5xx series with a maximum manufacturer u-value of
0.067 (vs code maximum of 0.20) and a maximum ASTM E283 air infiltration rating of
0.08 cfm/ftz at 25mph (vs code maximum of 0.37 cfm/ft2 at 25mph for doors and
windows,see N1104.8.1).
II. Table N1101.1(2)Additional Measures
a. Envelope Enhancement Measure: The structure complies with two Envelope
Enhancement Measures(one required per code)
i. Measure 4: High efficiency thermal envelope UA: The Proposed UA per Table
N1104.1(1) is 28% lower than Code UA.
ii. Measure 6: Ducted HVAC systems within conditioned space: (cannot be used
with Conservation Measure B or C). The heating system consists of the furnace
and hydronic heat tubes located in the garage and floor systems(no ducts). The
ventilation system consists of two Broan HRV90HT HRV units located in the
attics. Vent ducting for the HRV units runs under the attic floor from the
bathrooms to the bedrooms. There is no AC system. As the attic is part of the
conditioned space, all ducts rare within the conditioned space.
b. Conservation Measure:The structure complies with two Conservation Measures(one
required per code)
i. Measure A: High efficiency HVAC system: The heating is provided by a Navien
NCB-240 natural gas-fired combination on-demand domestic hot water heater
and boiler with AFUE of 0.95.
ii. Measure D: High efficiency water heating& lighting: The domestic hot water is
provided by a Navien NCB-240 natural gas-fired combination on-demand
domestic hot water heater and boiler with AFUE of 0.95. At least 90%of the
lighting fixtures will be LED bars placed on the ceiling of the garage/attic and
high on walls in the living spaces. Selected units will comply with the code
required 40Lumen/Watt minimum for high efficiency lighting. An example of
such a unit is the Feit electic LED shop light 3700 Lumen/38 W, for a light
conversion efficiency of 97 Lumens/Watt.
Firestopping at access points in garage ceiling
Range exhaust fan and water filter/distribution manifold in joist space above garage do not have space
above for full 5/8 drywall coverage. Proposal is to apply 5/8 drywall to cover all sides of cavity and base
floor, except parts of base floor blocked by mount points. A 5/8 drywall cover with weatherstrip will be
fastened below and covering the cavity.

1.02 Related Work
Opening preparation,miscellaneous or structural metal work,access panels,finish or
field painting,field electrical wiring,wire,conduit,fuses and disconnect switches are in
the Scope of Work of other divisions or trades.
1.03 Quality Assurance
In accordance with accepted quality assurance guidelines for motor-operated doors,
both the Thermacore door and electric operator(optional)shall be manufactured by a
single-source producer of door systems;as by Overhead Door Corporation.
Part 2 Product
2.01 Sections
Section profile will be ribbed,textured surface.Sections will be roll formed,hot-dipped,
galvanized steel exterior no less than.015"(.381 mm).Sections will be manufactured
by a continuous foamed-in place polyurethane lamination process resulting in a
metal/foam/metal sandwich of homogenous polyurethane insulation.Sections(Panels)
will have a thickness of 1 5/8"(41 mm)and will incorporate a dual PVC thermal break
and joint seal to prevent heat or cold conductivity.

2.02 Insulation
Insulation will be a rigid,foamed-in-place,polyurethane core free of CFCs and will be
fully encapsulated in nonpermeable materials to prevent loss of thermal efficiency over
time.The insulation will have an R-Value of 14.86(2.63 W/Msq),U-Value of.067(.380
Msq/W)-calculated values based on certified test data.
2.03 Air Infiltration
All doors will be constructed with an air infiltration rating of.08 cfm per square foot of
door at 15 mph(2.26 Lpm at 24 kmph)and.08 cfm per square foot of door at 25 mph
(2.26 Lpm at 40 kmph).(ASTM-E-283-73)
2.04 Windload
Door will be designed to meet or exceed building code requirements for windloads.
Deflection of door in the horizontal position will not exceed 1/120 of the door width.
Consult factory for unusual requirements.
105 End Stiles
End stiles will be 16-gauge steel.
2.06 Springs
Standard springs will be 10,000 cycles.25,000, 50,000, 75,000 or 100,000 cycle
springs are optional.
2.07 Hardware
Hinges and fixtures will be galvanized steel.Full-floating, ball-bearing rollers will have
hardened steel races.Roller sizes will be adequate for design requirements and
limitations.
2.08 Track
Track is 2"(51 mm)standard,or 3"(76 mm)optional,and angle mounted.Bracket
mounted track is an option,but not available on full vertical doors.
2.09 Lock
Lock will be interior mounted slide lock.
2.10 Weatherstrip
Weatherstrip between sections will be a dual PVC thermal break and joint seal.Bottom
weatherstrip will be EPDM rubber bulb-type strip.
2.11 Finish
Finish will be two-coat baked-on polyester with a white interior and white(Industrial
brown)exterior.
2.12 Operation
Operation will be by manual pull rope.(Optional chain hoist and electric operator are
available.)
