The goal was to raise community awareness of the `Forgotten War' and the role of Korean War veterans in America's history Mayor'Griffith and the city council invite the public to the November 18, council meeting, 7 30pm in City.Hall, to mark the event finale Tigard American Legion Post 158 veterans will present a color guard The city also will show the commemorative Korean War Video Showcase, that was produced locally by Tualatin Valley TV, the local cable access company, and written and directed by Tigard volunteer, Carol Mc Andrew The video captures some of the Korean War history and capsulates the local commemorative project. Bill Monahan said, "As the chairperson during the 3rd year of the project, I realized how many different ways we had spread the word and how many people in our community needed to be thanked The video showcase is a good way to do that. I also want to thank everyone who made it successful" Former mayor, Ken Sheckla was the first year chairman and today he feels the project was a huge success Sheckla, a veteran and member of the American Legion, says, "This project brought together Korean War veterans, and reminded all of us of the reason they served in Korea. The presentations that Page 1 of 2 FAX TO- AIGARD TIMES 6'0REGONIAN O/REGAL COURIER 1AADWSUSANMKOREAN WAR\PRESS RELEASE FINAL.DOC CITY WEB PAGE 0 OTHER. were made to the high school classes let our youth know what happened before their time Before starting this.project I was not aware of how many veterans from that'era live in Washington County Raising the commemorative flag at City Hall, and the band concert and ceremony in Cook Park were very meaningful to me " Retired Commander of Tigard American Legion Post 158, Patsy Nestor, served as chairperson during the 2nd year and took a very active part in spreading the word Patsy served during the Korean War and took her story to the schools, community service clubs and to the many public events held during the past 3 years Many local Korean War veterans willingly came forward, just as they did 50 years ago, and shared their experiences and a piece of living history with the Tigard community Their stories helped people understand how national pride and patriotism are values and qualities that call a person to duty for his countrywithout question, then as well as today They hope their message that,"freedom is not free" will not be forgotten today Page 2 of 2 FAX TO. 6 TIGARD TIMES 6 OREGONIAN 6 REGAL COURIER I:WDM\SUSANK\KOREAN WAR\PRESS RELEASE FINAL.DOC 0 CITY WEB PAGE 0 OTHER.
