CONTRACTOR ACTIVITY,OBSERVATIONS,CONCLUSIONS,RECOMMENDATIONS
I made this visit at the request of Todd Kurilo to observe foundation excavation subgrade conditions for single-family
home construction on Lot 157. While on site, I met with Mr. Kurilo and spoke with Sergey over the telephone. Mr.
Kurilo stated that a rock chipper had been used to achieve the desired excavation depth. Sergey stated that he
intended to place 3-inch-thick layer of compacted crushed rock on the subgrade surface prior to construction of
footings.
At the time of my visit, a stepped foundation excavation had been completed to an approximate depth of 2 to 9 feet
below adjacent grade. The building envelope was partially marked with offset survey stakes.
I observed the subgrade and probed the near surface soil with a steel shaft soil probe. The subgrade was basalt with
native, stiff silt at the rear. On the lower excavation bench, there was a layer of angular basalt fragments that ranged
from 3 to 18 inches thick that rested on an irregular surface of in-place basalt. One area had soft silt about 6 inches
thick immediately below the ground surface. I recommended that the soft subgrade be removed, and remained on site
while the excavator removed the soft silt.
Slow seepage of groundwater was emanating from fractures in the near-vertical basalt face and flowing across the
excavation bottom.
Based on observation and probing, the subgrade excavation has been prepared in general conformance with the
project specifications and our recommendations, and should perform as intended to support single family home
foundations. Footings should be formed such that they maintain a minimum 1 H:1 V setback from the base of
unsupported near vertical cuts.
We recommend that subsurface drainage systems be installed to collect and convey water from behind foundation
walls and away from the crawl space.
