RE:Sprinkler Requirements for Christenson Oil at Oregon Business Park, Building#2
The requirements are based on the Christenson Oil Palletized Storage Layout plan,STOR-1, by Ken
Fuglee&Associates, Inc.,dated 6/24/2014 with the following additional restrictions(see STOR-1, Rev.1):
1. There shall be a 6-inch transverse flue space between the plastic IBC Totes.
2. There shall be no drum storage adjacent to,or directly across the aisle from the IBC Totes.
3. Metal drums,when stacked,shall be on open-slatted wood pallets(no nesting of drums).
From NFPA 30-2012,Table 16.5.2.2 for Palletized and Stacked Storage of Liquids in Metal Containers,
Portable Tanks,and IBCs,for Relieving—Style Containers—Liquid Class IIIB:
Metal Containers>5 gallons and<=60 gallons(55 gal.drums)at maximum storage height of 18
ft., using sprinklers with K>=8.0,SR(HT), [standard response-high temperature],0.35 gpm/sq.
ft. over 3000 sq.ft. Where Quick-Response, High-Temperature(QR-HT)Sprinklers are used in
the table, densities are 0.05 gpm/sq.ft.higher than SR sprinklers over the same design area.
For Class IIIB(motor oil)in cartoned or uncartoned plastic HDPE containers, NFPA 30 only provides
storage schemes for rack storage to unlimited storage and ceiling heights and has no criteria for single
pallet storage of Class IIIB in these containers. The Directory of Fire Tests Involving Storage of
Flammable and Combustible Liquids in Containers,3`d edition,is a 2004 compilation of fire tests by Aon
Risk Consultants and lists tests performed for various sponsors. Fire Test P17 in the Directory was
performed at UL for the National Fire Protection Fire Research Foundation (NFPRF)of NFPA. In P17,8
full pallet loads at a height of 11 ft.2-in.,of cartoned motor oil in 1qt.plastic containers resulted in a
successful test at 0.30 gpm/sq.ft. using ordinary temperature, K=8.0,ceiling sprinklers. Sprinklers with a
k-factor of K=11.2 typically show better control in storage fire tests than K=8.0 due to larger water drops
that penetrate the fire plume.
For composite IBCs(plastic with metal frame), NFPA 30 calls for listed containers and allows up to 793
gallon containers. However,testing by the NFPRF at UL has shown no difference between listed and
unlisted containers in fire tests(From the risk engineering department of Zurich Insurance,Zurich
Services Corp. Risk Engineering bulletin:"Risktopic 2-4.009".) For 793 gallon containers with either Class
II or Class III liquids, NFPA 30 calls for a density of 0.45/3000 using K=11.2 sprinklers. Christenson Oil will
have only Class IIIB, be limited to 275 gallons per composite IBC, and have only 300 to 675 sq.ft.of area.
The K=11.2 sprinklers will provide a higher density over 2,000 sq.ft.than the original density of
0.495/2000 using K=8.0 sprinklers.
The 0.40 gpm/sq.ft. over 3,000 sq.ft. (3072 sq.ft. calculated)design on the Oregon Business Park, Bldg.
2 plan,dated 6/5/14 and reviewed by Ken Fuglee&Associates, using the Tyco ELO-231, K=11.2,286
degree(high-temperature) FRB storage sprinklers(SIN TY5131)meets or exceeds the above criteria.
