RE:AMSOIL Rack Storage of Combustible Liquids
%For: PACTRUST BUILDING 2
7272 SW Durham Road EXPIRES:12131115
Tigard, Oregon
INTRODUCTION
PacTrust tenant,Amsoil, wishes to store Class IIIB combustible liquids, consisting of motor oils and
similar products in 1 quart containers, in cardboard cartons in 3-tier double-row rack storage without in-
rack sprinklers, due to the normal risk of damage to the in-rack sprinklers during normal stocking
operations. They also store small quantities of Level 2 and Level 3 aerosols on pallets, and small
quantities of Class 1116 combustible liquids in 55-gallon metal, relieving style containers. Any
recommended sprinkler system design criteria must also satisfy requirements for the limited quantities
of the Level 2 and 3 aerosols and combustible liquids in 55-gallon metal drums.
ANALYSIS
The racks are arranged as a single-row rack at walls with double-row racks in the space between the
walls. Aisles between all racks are 16 ft.-8 in. The quantity of Class 1116 liquids is the same as if the racks
were 2-tiers high with minimum 8 ft. aisles. The aisle spacing of 16ft.-8 in. is more than double that in
the published design requirements. This extra distance will reduce the amount of radiant heat, which is
an exponential factor based on distance, that would normally cause a fire to cross an aisle to another
row of racks. The sprinkler design tables in NFPA 30B are based on a broad range of container sizes,
storage heights, and flash points which allow for either higher flash point materials in larger containers,
or consider lower flash point materials in the size of container to be used, and at greater maximum
storage heights. Class 1116 non-relieving style containers with a larger capacity are allowed up to 18 ft.
with K=8.0 sprinklers and 0.25 gpm/sq.ft. density. NFPA 30B also allows Class IB and IC liquids in
containers of 1.3 gal. or less, Class II liquids in containers of 5.3 gal. or less, Class IIIA liquids in containers
of 60 gal. or less, and Class 1116 in containers, intermediate bulk containers, and portable tanks of 275
gal. or less to be protected as for a 20 ft. high Class IV commodity. NFPA 13 would require Class IV, non-
encapsulated commodities in single-and double-row racks at 20 ft. high with 8 ft. aisles and high-
temperature ceiling.sprinklers to have a density of 0.495 gpm/sg. ft over a design area of 2000 sq. ft.
This configuration is not specified in NFPA 30B since it has never been actually tested. Fir fire protection
schemes with in-rack sprinklers and barriers, the barriers are not required for liquids having flash points
of 450 deg. F or greater. The AMSOIL Class IIIB liquid MSDS sheets show flash points ranging from 435.2
deg. F to 449.6 deg. F.

RECOMMENDATION
In order to use ceiling-only sprinklers, a higher density than similar conditions is needed. The similar
total container volume to that present with an 8 ft. aisle should be credited towards using ceiling-only
sprinklers. Sprinklers with k-factors of K=11.2 and greater have demonstrated in testing to have greater
downward penetration of fire plumes, which are expected to be increased with greater storage heights.
The use of high-temperature, K=11.2 sprinklers at a higher density than that for 20 ft. high storage of
Class IV commodities will compensate for the storage height of the Class IIIB liquids. The high flash
points (A35 deg. F)will also provide for a slower growing fire than more combustible liquids. The
recommended design criteria is 0.60 gpm/sg.ft. over a design area of 2000 sq.ft., using K=11.2 high-
temperature (286 deg. F)sprinklers with a minimum aisle separation-of 16 ft. In accordance with the
fire code (OFC) up to one-half of the required aisle may be used temporarily for placing of pallets during
re-stocking operations. The 0.6 gpm/sq. f.t density is also greater than that required for the Level 2 and
3 aerosol palletized storage (one-pallet high) and the 55 gallon metal drum storage (one pallet high). A
maximum of 2500 lbs. (approximately 2 pallets) of combined Level 2 and Level 3 aerosol may be stored
outside of a separated area (chain-link fence or similar separation).
