Tigard City Council Wins Statewide Planning Award
The Tigard City Council has been awarded a Distinguished Leadership award from the Oregon Chapter of
the American Planning Association (APA) for its contributions in adopting the City of Tigard's Strategic Plan
for the next 20 years. The plan is built around a clear strategic vision: "The most walkable community in the
Pacific Northwest where people of all ages and abilities enjoy healthy and interconnected lives."
The commendation was presented at the Oregon APA annual conference held in Portland on Oct.15 and 16.
Tigard Councilor John Goodhouse received the award on behalf of the council.
"This is a really well deserved award," said Kenny Asher, community development director for the City of
Tigard. "The City Council was both visionary and practical in how it went about the Strategic Plan. I've
never seen an elected body take such a bold step to declare its aspirations for the future."
"The Council's expression of its vision and leadership by incorporating walkability into all actions is truly
commendable," said Stacy Humphrey, the Awards Committee chair for the Oregon APA. "The Council is
ensuring that walking can be a part of everyone's daily life, and is implementing this through funding choices
and programs such as Safe Routes to Schools."
The Distinguished Leadership by an Elected or Appointed Official award recognizes an elected or appointed
official in Oregon who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of planning,to his or her
community or to a specific planning program or activity.
In November 2014,the City Council unanimously adopted its new roadmap. The plan is the result of a multi-
year effort involving the community, citizen advisory groups and City Council. The plan's framework and
vision will steer the city's direction through 2034. The plan includes the following four goals:
Facilitate walking connections to develop an identity
Ensure development advances the vision
Engage the community through dynamic communication
Fund the vision while maintaining core services
