08/27/2015 - Water Conservation Success City of Tigard F . Press Release EML 13125 SW Hall Boulevard Tigard,Oregon 97223 www.tigard-or.gov FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Aug. 27, 2015 Contact: Aaron Beattie Water Operations Supervisor City of Tigard 503-718-2690 abeattie@tigard-or.gov Tigard Water Service Area Customers Score Conservation Success A decade-long effort to promote water conservation in the Tigard Water Service Area (TWSA) is now showing the rewards. Residents in the TWSA are reducing their water consumption and helping to manage the city's most valuable resource—reliable and clean drinking water. The overall consumption of water a day,per person, has fallen in the service area from 107 gallons a day to 91 gallons a day—a 15 point drop, between 2005 and 2014. During that same time frame, the number of residents has increased from 55,415 to 60,236. (See attached infographic.) "Despite the demand that has accompanied expected growth,we are wisely managing a critical public resource, and will continue those activities," said Aaron Beattie, water operations supervisor. "Efforts by the city's Public Works Water Division and actions by commercial and residential customers have led to reductions in individual use and systems improvements that deliver water more efficiently. We especially want to thank our customers for doing their part to conserve water through wise practices in pursuit of this shared goal." The TWSA includes King City, Durham, two-thirds of Tigard and the Tigard Water District. The Water Division has promoted water conservation for more than a decade through its Water Conservation Program. Efforts include public outreach that encourages all customers to voluntarily conserve their water use, pricing structure to encourage water conservation and collaboration with other water purveyors through the Regional Water Providers Consortium. Founded in 1997, the consortium allows municipalities to plan and manage water supplies in the greater Portland region, including Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties. The consortium's conservation program utilizes a variety of communication and outreach efforts to inform the public about ways to use water efficiently. To do this, the program targets a diverse range of users including residential customers, property managers, children, school teachers, industry partners and landscape professionals. Tigard's water conservation efforts also include public engagement through its communications materials, classroom presentation for elementary students, a rebate for water efficient toilets and the distribution of free indoor and outdoor water conservation kits. By the summer of 2016,TWSA will begin receiving high-quality drinking water from the Clackamas River through the Lake Oswego-Tigard Water Partnership.
