08/10/2015 - Pedestrian Bridge Ceremony - IN City of Tigard Press Release NEIL 13125 SW Hall Boulevard Tigard,Oregon 97223 www.tigard-or.gov FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Aug. 10, 2015 Contact: Rudy Owens Communications Strategist City of Tigard 503-718-2758 rudy@tigard-or.gov City to Celebrate New Pedestrian Walkway on North Dakota Street Bridge The City of Tigard will celebrate the opening of a new pedestrian walkway along the North Dakota Street Bridge on Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. The walkway was completed in early August. Mayor John Cook will preside over the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new enhancement. The protected walkway now makes it safer for walkers, bikers and strollers to cross the structure without being on North Dakota Street and exposed to automobile traffic. The bridge is located just east of the Fanno Creek Trail, a popular corridor for many walkers, bikers and runners. "Residents let the city know that a walking connection on the bridge would make it safer for pedestrians and bicyclists to travel," said Mayor John Cook. "Public Works staff capitalized on the recent bridge repair project by working with our contractors and consultants to add the improvement. This walkway is a great example of our strategic plan in action, making improvements that help to promote walkability and physical activity for people of all ages and abilities." The new walkway cost approximately$50,000. Vehicle traffic on the bridge resumed on July 17, after closing on June 1, to repair the two-lane structure for all traffic. State officials had determined the timbers supporting the bridge had deteriorated, necessitating steel beam reinforcement. The city safely and quickly repaired the bridge and worked to minimize disruption to area residents and businesses. Since the city adopted its strategic plan in November 2014,it has been using opportunities such as the bridge project and new developments to build more sidewalks and walkways that promote connections and active transportation. The ribbon cutting event will take place on the southeast side of the bridge, on North Dakota Street between 105th Place and Tiedeman Avenue. Note, there is limited on-street parking, and parking lots owned by area businesses are not available for public use. A short walk to the site may be required.
