Mayor John Cook Invites Community to Main Street Ribbon Cutting
The City of Tigard's work to rebuild Main Street through Downtown Tigard is nearly complete.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for Thursday,November 13 at 10 a.m. at the intersection of
Main and Tigard Streets.
Work began in January to rebuild the southern half of Main Street in Downtown Tigard, from
Pacific Highway/99W to the railroad crossing. The newly re-designed street will improve circulation
for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. Other features include a colored-concrete medallion, new
pedestrian crosswalks, and "Green Street" elements such as stormwater planters to help capture and
treat stormwater runoff.
The upgrades to Main Street make Downtown Tigard more attractive, spur business investment
and development, and encourage people to visit and shop the downtown area. Other public and private
investments were timed to coincide with the construction work. The city provided new off-street
parking and replaced old water and sewer lines in the downtown. At the same time, business and
property owners invested an additional$.5 million in storefront improvements.
The city partnered with area businesses during construction to minimize impacts and keep the
downtown"Open for Business." "Our thanks to all downtown business operators who worked
through the construction and to the people who continued their support," says Project Manager Kim
McMillan.
Mayor John Cook is excited about the prospects for downtown. "With the rebuilding of Main
Street and new private investments in the downtown core, the downtown is thriving. People are
coming back to see how Main Street has been transformed to make it more accessible, more walkable
and a very special place."
