City Debuts Safer Pedestrian Connection on Oak Way
The city recently completed a bike and pedestrian path that creates a safe and convenient
walking/biking route through Tigard's Metzger neighborhood. You're invited to attend the ribbon
cutting on Thursday, September 25 at 7:30 a.m. at 90th Avenue and Oak Way.
This project kicks off Tigard's "safe-routes-to-school" effort by providing a safe connection for bikes
and pedestrians between Metzger Elementary School and the Learning Tree Child Care Center. The
new trail features include improved traffic/vehicle controls and a soft, open pathway with improved
pedestrian access from 87th Avenue to 90th Avenue.
The Oak Way project also supports the city's goal of becoming a walkable community where people of
all ages and abilities enjoy healthy and interconnected lives. City Planners knew that a small
investment (far below the size and cost of a typical Capital Improvement Project) could make a big
difference for the neighborhood. Accessing the city's Strategic Planning "Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper"
(LQC) program,Associate Planner Gary Pagenstecher collaborated with neighbors, staff and
volunteers to submit a plan to improve the Oak Way Pedestrian Path in just six weeks and with
$20,000.
