TRANSPORTATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE SUMMARY—August 6,2014 City of Tigard 113125 SWHall Blvd, Tigard OR 97223 1503-63941:71 1 www.geLrd-or.gov Page 1 of I I.•\Transportation Advisory Committee\201,'\08 August\Tigard Transportation Advisory Committee-08-06-2014.doex July 28, 2014 Dear Judith, Central to TriMet's mission is connecting riders to jobs, which is particularly vital as more and more Oregonians are returning to the workforce. The Brookings Institute looked at the percentage of workers who have access to transit in the major metro areas of the U.S. According to Brookings, of the 100 largest metropolitan areas, the Portland region ranked 12th overall, with 83 percent of workers having access to transit. Portland is well above the 69 percent national average, but we also know there's more TriMet can do to connect local employers and workers by making job access a high priority. Today, we're focused on developing a road map for meeting this demand for the next two decades. TriMet staff is leading a regional effort to develop a shared vision for the Future of Transit through five targeted Service Enhancement Planning efforts. We are enlisting business leaders, employers, non-profit advocates and job seekers to identify the gaps in service to improve access to current and future employment centers. In addition to helping employers and employees connect, improving job access also helps take cars off the road and eases congestion during the peak commute hours that hinder efficient freight mobility. According to the Texas Transportation Institute, TriMet services saves the region and local businesses $150 million a year in reduced congestion. Join us in creating a long-term vision for the Future of Transit in our region by sending your ideas to future .trimet.orw. Providing high quality transit access for workers around the region and employees like yours, is essential to fulfilling our vision to make this one of the most prosperous places to live in the country. Thanks for riding, 14 Neil McFarlane, TriMet General Manager P.S. Thoughts on improving job access?
