This deck footing was recently installed to widen the deck. A small surface crack is evident around this deck footing where a 6-foot tall 1.5H:1V slope exists. Based on hand probing, the upper 3 to 4 feet is landscape fill and foundation backfill that probes soft to medium stiff. Below that the soil probes very stiff and the deck footing appears to bear on this very stiff soil layer. Based on our limited review, we conclude that the new deck footing is well founded. The surface crack is not unusual and is likely not indicative of a high potential for a soil slump. The slope is short and, in our opinion, is moderately stable at present. Our work scope pertains to a geotechnical engineer's footing review only and the conditions existing and exposed at the time of our site visit.
