TIGARD Minutes
MEETING DATE/TIME: Wednesday, October 10,2012 7 p.m.

1. CALL TO ORDER:
At 7:01 p.m.Vice-Chair John Storhm called to order the October 10,2012 Tigard Library Board.
2. ROLL CALL
Vice-Chair John Storhm called the roll.
Present at the meeting were: Laura Cadiz, Scott Hancock,Dan Snyder and John Storhm;Alternates
Stephanie Carter and Katie Harris;Library Director Margaret Barnes and Executive Assistant Alison
Grimes. David Burke,Linda Monahan and Cecilia Nguyen were excused.
3. APPROVE MINUTES
The Board reviewed and approved the minutes from the Wednesday, September 12, 2012 meeting.

4. AGENDA ADDITIONS AND DELETIONS

5. CALL TO THE PUBLIC
Molly Carlisle,Readers Services Manager, met with the Board as this month's staff guest. An Ohio native
and graduate of Ohio State University, Carlisle received her MLS from the University of South Carolina.
Moving to Portland, Carlisle was hired at TPL in August,2003 as the Youth Services Supervisor. She
became Readers Services Manager in August of this year. Although she loves her new position, Carlisle said
she does miss certain aspects of her old job—especially story time.

6. POLICY REVIEW
Two American Library Association(ALA) documents and one Library policy were presented to the Board for
their review:
o The Freedom to Read
This statement,originally created and adopted by the ALA in June of 1953,is periodically reviewed and
reaffirmed by the Board. Motion to endorse and reaffirm:

o The Library Bill of Rights
Also an ALA affirmation,this was originally adopted in June, 1948. Motion to endorse and reaffirm:

7. LIBRARY OPERATIONS
Barnes passed out monthly statistical information from both WCCLS and Library operations.
Upcoming programs include the 50'anniversary of the Columbus Day storm,ever-popular BJ the
Clown,and the first annual Star Wars Reads Week. The recent Friends book sale netted over$6,000.
Barnes noted that some comments are still being received concerning the Thursday closure and passed
out grand opening celebration information for the Aloha Community Library.

Harris told the Board she learned that snowboarding passes now contains RFID chips and told the
Board about an article she read about a library that almost closed but raised funds to remain open

through Parade magazine, an insert found in many Sunday newspapers. Harris also showed the
Board a picture she took of the "Take One—Leave One" book box placed in her neighborhood.

There being no further business, Storhm adjourned the meeting at 7:51 p.m.
The next meeting of the Tigard Library Board will be Wednesday,November 14 at 7 p.m. in the second
floor Conference Room of the Library, 13500 SW Hall Blvd.,Tigard.
