Call to the Public
Dela Burgess, Library Assistant in Circulation, met with the Board this month. With the
Library for about three years, she passed out small forms used in Circulation showing
what needs to be done to damaged items (mended, buffed, missing parts, etc.).
Stressing how important they are to the Library, Burgess then explained how volunteers
are trained and answered several questions from the board.
Library Operations
Noted earlier was attorney approval for a "No Smoking within 45' of building" sign.
Forty-five feet from the entrance to the building puts smokers on the other side of the
bollards, keeping cigarette smoke far from the entrance, a cause of many patron
complaints.
Monthly statistics were reviewed and Barnes noted that the Library was on track for a
record 1.5 million circulated items. On a somber note, she informed the Board of the
layoffs and reduced hours that occurred Citywide. The Library reduced staff by 3.1 FTE
and a reduction of 4 open hours will be made by July. Passage of the renewal levy in
November will be critical to operations.
Other pertinent information was that the City is currently in union negotiations and
budget meetings have been moved to May.
Library Policies
Dropped from agenda.
Annual Volunteer Recognition Event
Scheduled for Friday, April 16, the annual recognition honors volunteers who have
achieved milestones in hours and/or years of service to the Library. Board members, as
volunteers, were also invited to attend. Barnes checked with Chairman Burke to see if
he was planning on attending and if he would say a few words to attendees.
City Council Meeting Discussion
In preparation for May's meeting with City Council, Lisa Elliott, Young Adult Librarian,
stopped in to give Board members a quick hands-on training on the WiiTM home video
game console. Heath and Monahan reluctantly but bravely tried their hand at baseball
and bowling. Other non-traditional programming the Board will mention to Council will
be the Super Bowl and Civil War football games patrons viewed on the big screen in the
Community Room, oral histories of the Depression Era and the outdoor music series at
the Gazebo. They'll end with a brief mention of the upcoming levy. The WiiTM gaming
console will be brought to next month's Board meeting for one last practice run.
WCCLS Update
Polaris software is scheduled to be upgraded next week. The Hearing Voices finale is
Saturday, April 17 at the Tigard Library. Finally, there will be a meeting next week to go
over the operational levy timeline.

Adjournment: There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:19 p.m.
