03/12/2009 - Minutes TIGARD PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES Thursday, March 12, 2009 Call to Order: 7:01 p.m. Roll Call Present at the meeting: David Burke, Chair Pro Tem, Board members Richard Heath, Jan Thenell, Karen Levear and Jennifer Vasicek; Library Director Margaret Barnes and Executive Assistant Alison Grimes. Cecilia Nguyen and Linda Monahan were excused. Minutes The February 12, 2009 Board meeting minutes were reviewed and, there being no additions or corrections, the minutes were approved as read. Motion Thenell Second Vasicek Burke Aye Nguyen Excused Heath Aye Thenell Aye Levear - Abstain Vasicek - Aye Agenda Additions and Deletions Due to the unexpected loss of the Board Chair, Brian Kelly, it was necessary to discuss a replacement. The Board recommended current Chair Pro Tem, David Burke, fill the position. Opening the floor for nominations, members suggested David Burke as Chair and Karen Levear as Chair Pro Tem. Both agreed to serve. Motion Vasicek Second Thenell Burke Aye Nguyen Excused Heath Aye Thenell Aye Levear Aye Vasicek - Aye Barnes will check the by-laws and then speak with the Mayor regarding Linda Monahan or; possibly a brick or purchasing a book related to architecture. Vasicek noted that Kelly was a Frank Lloyd Wright fan and all knew he was a devoted family man. It was decided to purchase both an architectural and life-long learning. Barnes will obtain the books to show Board members at the April meeting. Call to the Public None. Library Operations Library statistics show a 6 7% increase in Internet use. Internet usage at Tigard Library is over one third of the total Internet traffic in the Cooperative. TPL is the only library in the Cooperative on broadband, which is why patrons need their library card to access the Internet. 425 copies of the book were handed out to those attending the Stubborn Twig program. Oregon Reads!were all well attended. Statistics from the annual Library Survey are being compiled and will be discussed at patrons wanting e-mail notification seemed to be the most-requested item. E-mailing patrons that their holds are ready for pick-up will be more efficient and patrons may very pleased with the Library. Skype classes started this week. The Tigard Times interviewed Paula Walker, the the Joint Meeting with City Council The meeting was rescheduled from March to the third Tuesday in May May 19. Some of the ideas suggested to present to City Council were: 0 0 Bring in two laptops and show Council how Skype works Barnes will check with 0 0 Patrons flocking to the Library during bad times. 0 0 Library not stagnant always progressive. The Board will further discuss the May meeting with City Council during the April Board meeting. Council will also be reminded of the Library 5t" Anniversary celebration coming up in August. WCCLS Update Barnes briefly discussed the report generated by WCCLS, What You Said: Washington Countians Weigh In On the Future of Their Libraries, a summary of all 12 libraries in the Cooperative. No decisions were made during the WCCLS meeting concerning the future of libraries. Grimes will email the report to all members for their review. Barnes had attended a follow- changes made. Libraries in the Cooperative are different from each other and it would be difficult to shift to a standard district at this time. Other Business None. Adjournment: There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:13 p.m. The next Library Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Tigard Public Library, 13500 SW Hall Blvd.
