[Roof-covering Materials] Roofing Systems
See General Information for Roof-covering Materials
GENERAL
This category covers materials intended for roofing systems that provide Class A, B or C coverings on combustible (wood - 3/4 in.-
thick sheathing boards or plywood, unless otherwise indicated) and noncombustible (steel, concrete or poured gypsum) decks,
unless otherwise indicated in the individual certifications. Minimum 2 in.-thick unfaced structural cement fiber units, formed into
slabs or boards and covered under Structural Cement-Fiber Units (CIYT), are suitable alternates as roof decks for all certified
roofing systems intended for use over noncombustible decks.
The use of 7/16-in. (minimum) thick nonveneer APA-rated sheathing (oriented strand board panels, structural particleboard
panels, composite panels or waferboard panels) is a suitable alternate to 15/32-in. (minimum)thick plywood specified in the
Class A, B or C certifications for the individual manufacturers. Certifications are applicable to roofing systems used over insulated
decks when so indicated in the individual certifications.
Certified gypsum wallboard, any thickness, may be included in any roofing system without adversely affecting the certification.
Insulations may be attached to the deck with fasteners, hot mopping asphalt or certified adhesive.
Certifications are applicable either for new construction, recovering or replacement purposes. (Recovering is the process of covering
an existing roofing system with a new roofing system. Replacement is the process of removing an existing roof system and
replacing it with a new system.) For recovering situations, certified uninsulated new construction assemblies are not intended for
installation over existing certified insulated assemblies unless specifically certified under Maintenance and Repair Systems. See
MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR SYSTEMS below for further information.
Certified insulated systems may be installed over existing certified insulated systems when:
1) the new system is certified for use with the existing roof insulation type (glass fiber, perlite, wood fiber, foamed
plastic, etc.), and
2) the total thickness of insulation in both systems does not exceed the maximum specified for the new system
being applied.
For installation over noncombustible decks, any certified insulated system utilizing minimum 1-in.-thick insulation (glass fiber,
polyisocyanurate or perlite) may be used over any existing insulated system regardless of the type if its insulation in both
systems does not exceed the maximum specified for the new system being applied. Certification is determined by the new
construction system.
The above classifications apply only to coverings composed of certified materials assembled as described in the individual
manufacturer certifications; fleshings and trimmings being the same as or not less than the equivalent of the roofing systems in
each class, or of 16 oz or heavier copper, No. 26 gauge or heavier galvanized steel, or 0.019 in. thick or heavier aluminum.
Roofing systems investigated for impact resistance are so indicated in the individual certifications by the appearance of the word
"Impact" and the applicable Class No. (1, 2, 3 or 4) adjacent to the "Incline."These systems are also referenced under Roof-
covering Materials, Impact Resistance (TGAM).
See TGAM for a description of the Impact Resistance Certification Program.

COLD-APPLICATION SYSTEMS
(ASPHALT FELTS OR PLY SHEETS WITH COLD CEMENTS AND COATINGS)
These roofing systems are composed of asphalt-saturated organic felts or asphalt-coated glass fiber felts or ply sheets applied
with cold-application cement and surfaced with a cold-application coating. See the individual certifications for designations and
application rates for cements and coatings. Unless otherwise required, granules or sand may be optionally applied to any coating.
COMBINATION HOT AND COLD SYSTEMS
These roofing systems are composed of asphalt-saturated organic felts or asphalt-coated glass fiber felts applied with hot roofing
asphalt and surfaced with cold-application coatings. Some systems are surfaced with mineral surfacings, such as sand or No. 11
roofing granules, which are embedded in the coating. Unless otherwise required, granules or sand may be optionally applied to
any coating. See the individual certifications for designations and application rates for coatings and surfacing materials.
FLUID-APPLIED COATING SYSTEMS
These roofing systems are composed of a number of layers or coats of plastic roof coatings. Adequate drying time is allowed
between successive layers or coats to form a protective membrane. Some systems may utilize various types of reinforcing
filaments embedded in a coating layer while wet. Also, some systems may utilize surfacing materials. See the individual
certifications for designations and application rates for coatings and surfacing materials.
MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR SYSTEMS
These roofing systems are composed of various types of roofing applications which are specifically limited for installation (recover)
over existing roofing systems as specified. These systems may not meet certification requirements without being used over
existing systems. Recovering may also be accomplished with certified new construction roofing systems where compatibility has
been determined by test, by empirical data or by known performance properties of similar materials to the test methods. The
following guidelines are provided to assist Authorities Having Jurisdiction in determining the suitability of a new construction roofing
system as a recover system.
Noncombustible Deck Construction:
1. Insulated roof systems may be utilized over any type of existing roof system and maintain its new construction
rating when the roof deck is noncombustible.
2. Insulated multiple-layered hot mopped, cold application or modified bitumen membrane new construction
systems with a base ply of Type G1 or Type G2 may be used over any existing roof system and maintain its new
construction rating when the roof deck is noncombustible. The insulation may be omitted from the recover system.
3. Uninsulated multiple-layered hot mopped, cold application or modified bitumen membrane new construction
systems with a base ply of Type G1 or Type G2 may be used over any existing uninsulated roof system and
maintain its new construction rating when the roof deck is noncombustible.
4. Spray applied foam systems with minimum 1-1/2-in.-thick foam may be used over any existing roof system and
maintain its new construction rating when the roof deck is noncombustible.
