Re: 7100 SW Hampton—Wall Openings
Project Number: 13257
Dear Jack:
At your request, a representative of T.M. Rippey Consulting Engineers performed a limited
visual structural observation of the 8" thick CMU wall at the north side of the 7100 SW Hampton
building. This is a solid 8" CMU wall that is reinforced with a combination of horizontal mesh
and horizontal bars. At the time of our site visit two openings were cut through the wall, one 18"
x 18" and the other 24" wide by 16" high. The two openings do not align vertically and are
located several feet away from one another. Based on the wall being reinforced and the two
openings being spaced widely apart, it is our opinion that there is no reinforcement of the
openings needed. Additionally, the wall length measures approximately 34', and the code
requires wall reinforcement if more than 10% of the lateral force resistance is removed. The
largest opening is 24", or 2' out of the 34', or 6% of the lateral capacity, and therefore, the wall
with the openings is not required to be upgraded.
If you have any questions or require any additional information, please do not hesitate to call.
Sincerely,
