Subject: Re: Dormer windows in Krager shop
Hi Albert, Thanks for the help. Realistically, I would simply like to install a single window of about 4' wide by
3.5 ' high, centered along the length of the building with a simple shed roof just widen enough to reasonably
protect the window, similar to the concept of the photo below, but just one window per side. I have CC my
designer Tom Easton of CADNW so we can get on the same page here and move forward. Could you please
take a look or forward to the person I need to discuss with. Regards, Warren Krager 360- 903 -4861

Warren, I appreciate your frustration with submitting plans and revisions but we are obliged to tread a sometimes fine
line here: we at the city are not allowed to design something for an applicant ... basically, we can only approve or reject
plans while directing an applicant to requirements of the building or municipal codes. That said, however, since you
2
have proposed adding dormers, perhaps we can respond with some indication of what might be acceptable. Since the
accessory building height restriction is a Development Code issue the right person to have that conversation with will be
the Planner who reviews this dormer revision. I'll find out who that is and will get back to you about setting up an
opportunity to discuss alternative types of dormers.

Subject: Re: Dormer windows in Krager shop
Hello Albert and Dan, I appreciate your assistance, however, rather than reject my concept and letting me keep
guessing and spending money and time on plan revisions and re- submissions to the city, would it be possible
for the city to indicate what width of window and shed dormer would be permitted in this case. I am simply
trying to get some natural light from the east and west into the upper level and don't want to throw out the
primary design and start over with a whole new set of plans. Could I make an appointment to discuss? Warren

Warren, I've spoken with Dan. When you were speaking of adding dormers he had in mind what might be thought of as
a typical dormer ... a gable- roofed, single window dormer.
Your proposed shed - roofed double dormers dominate the roofline. They account for approximately 64% of the overall
roof area and from the front and rear elevations raise the effective roofline well beyond the allowable 15 ft. average of
the gambrel peak and eave heights. I will route this new proposal through Planning and Engineering as a proposed
revision but I expect that they will have to reject it. It shouldn't take more than a day or two for us to find out.

Hi Albert, I have spoken with Dan Nelson at city about adding dormer windows for better natural light in
proposed shop loft. Could you please take a look at the attached conceptual sketch and discuss with Dan
whether this concept can be approved.

Warren, I appreciate your frustration with submitting plans and revisions but we are obliged to tread a sometimes fine
line here: we at the city are not allowed to design something for an applicant ... basically, we can only approve or reject
plans while directing an applicant to requirements of the building or municipal codes. That said, however, since you
have proposed adding dormers, perhaps we can respond with some indication of what might be acceptable. Since the
accessory building height restriction is a Development Code issue the right person to have that conversation with will be
the Planner who reviews this dormer revision. I'll find out who that is and will get back to you about setting up an
opportunity to discuss alternative types of dormers.
