RE: Approval of Hi -piled Storage.
INTENT: Multi -craft Plastics, Inc., is requesting approval of the storage of plastics, in
sheet form, in the warehouse located at 7298 SW Tech Center Drive, Tigard, OR., 97223-
8046. We are requesting that the plastics be Classified as a Class -IV Commodity due the
physical form of the Commodities, storage configuration and sprinkler protection.
Storage is to be in racks, single and double row, on pallets and not to exceed 15 feet in
height. The high -piled rack storage will not exceed 12,000 square feet in area.
High -piled combustible storage is addressed in Article 81 of the Uniform Fire Code.
• Article 81 additionally references UBC Standard 9 -1, NFPA 230 and NFPA 13 (2002).
The relevant Chapters are cited below.
Classification
UFC 8101.4.1, Classification of Commodities, states,
"Materials listed within each commodity classification are
assumed to be un- modified for improved combustibility
characteristics. Use offlame- retarding modifiers or the
physical form of the material could change the
classification of a commodity".
The physical form of the material in this storage arrangement reduces the fire hazard of
Group A plastics. While these plastics are typically classified as a high- hazard commodity
when in excess of 15% by weight (Figure 8101.4 -A), the high -piled storage being
proposed would be composed of bulk -sheet materials on pallets. As noted within the
attached MSDS sheets, these plastics have very high ignition temperatures and are
difficult to ignite. The NFPA flammability rating is "1."
Any fire exposure will impinge only the exterior edges and top sheet of each pallet load.
Should a fire occur in the warehouse the automatic sprinkler system would activate well
before the ignition temperature of these plastics is reached (in excess of 800 degrees
Fahrenheit). With the flat - sheet/bulk storage configuration, water spray from activated
sprinklers would run across the flat surface of the exposed top sheet and down the
exposed sides. There would be no exposure of the bulk of the product on the pallet and
there would be no voids within the product on the pallet for a fire to hide in.
General fire - protection and life -safety requirements are addressed in UFC Table 81 -A.
Listed below are the relevant requirements for this storage. These requirements shall be
satisfied.
Commodity Class IV, 2501 - 12,000 sq. ft., non -pubic accessible, Option #1
• An automatic fire- extinguishing system is required (8102.4 references
8102 and 8104)
• Fire detection is not required
. • Building access shall be per UFC 902.2
• Smoke and heat removal is not required
• Curtain boards are not required
• Small hose valves and stations are not required
Aisles, per UFC 8102.10.2.2, will be a minimum of 96 inches in width. No dead ends
will exceed 20 feet, per UBC 1004.2.6.
Portable fire extinguishers will be provided per NFPA 10.
The automatic fire sprinkler design density shall extend the lesser of 15 feet beyond the
high -piled storage area or to a permanent partition, per UFC 8102.2
Page 2 of 3 -
Per 8104.2.1, Rack Storage -Fire Protection, "An automatic fire sprinkler system shall be
installed throughout the building or to one -hour fire- resistive walls constructed in
accordance with the Building Code. The design and installation of the automatic fire
sprinkler system and other applicable fire protection shall be in accordance with the
Building code (see UBC Standard 9 -1) and NFPA 230 (1999)." Per NFPA 13-
12.2.2.1.4.
NFPA 13- 12.3.2.1 addresses control mode density-area sprinkler protection criteria for
rack storage of Class I through Class N commodities stored up to and including 25 ft. in
height, which applies to this storage arrangement. Per 12.3.2.1.1.1, ceiling sprinkler
water demand shall be determined in accordance with 12.3.2.1.2 for single and double -
row racks. Table 12.3.2.1.2 references density/area curves of figure 12.3.2.1.2(a) through
figure 12.3.2.1.2 (g), of which figure 12.3.2.1.2 (d) applies in this case (use curve E or F).
Table 12.3.2.1.2 further references figure 12.3.2.1.5.1 for density adjustments due to
storage height.
Sprinkler density requirements shall be hydraulically calculated per this chapter and
submitted by the Sprinkler Contractor.
