Uncommon features... Unbeatable price... s =: GENERAL INFORMATION A pressure switch • lo is not enough. • Commercial pressure switches applied to domestic water systems are always used in conjunction with hydro pneumatic pressure tanks that protect the switch and pump motor _;" ' #rom the damaging effectsof rapid_cydiAg,- the_ number _one- cause..of-system_failure. The... -.._ ._ . pressure tank provides a draw down capacity so the pump always runs for a minimum of one to two minutes. This allows dissipation of the excessive heat generated when the motor starts. Equally as important, it keeps the pressure switch from chattering, which can destroy it's contacts in a matter of minutes as motor starting current arcs across them repeatedly. In the absence of a pressure tank, a "minimum run timer" must be used to guarantee that the pump does not rapidly turn on and off repeatedly. Since these timers are not rated for motor current it is necessary to use a properly sized motor contactor, controlled by the pressure switch and timer, to start and stop the pump motor. An added benefit of this approach is that the pressure switch and timer conduct only the very small amount o current used by the coil of the motor contactor. Unless these measures are taken the pump will generally start and stop several times a second during the low flow situations that comprise the large majority of real life events in residential fire protection. This causes motor starting current (about seven times full load running amps) to spike all of the electrical components :.. in the system relentlessly, which can cause the circuit breaker to trip or the pressure switch or the motor to fail very quickly. (Well before the N minute water su pply for a typical residential fire sprinkler system is exhausted.) Play it safe. Never rel on a pressure switch alone lives depend on it. TALCO Fire Systems...
