RE Supporting column in garage.
The purpose of this note is to thank each of you for your cooperation and to confirm that, on
Friday, March 4, 2005, with the assistance of personnel from Don Morrisette Homes we
inspected the supporting column in the garage at 12068 SW Whistler's Loop, specifically the
point where the column was notched to allow mounting of the overhead door track, and found
that, even after the notching, the column exceeds the dimensions and load bearing capacity of
the 6 "x6" column called for on the engineered plans. Notching of the column does not appear
to have improperly weakened the column or violated the Oregon One and Two Family
Dwelling Code.
The owners, Mr. & Mrs. Niksich, had asked whether notching the column was consistent with
the approved plans for the house or whether the notching might have weakened the column.
Blake Agate from Don Morissette Homes cut into the sheetrock covering the column to expose
its full dimensions and the depth of the notch. We found that an 8 "x8" column had been
installed instead of the 6 "x6" called for on the plans and that the notch extended into the
column approximately 1 l inches. Therefore, at the point of the notch, the column was
effectively reduced in size from an 8 "x8" to a 6 "x8 ", still exceeding the required 6 "x6 ".
