Karen:
Drawing A1.0 originally detailed the new interior partition walls to span from the existing slab to the
bottom side of the roof decking at the 29 foot level. The connection from the new wall to the deck
included a deflection head. Please refer to Details 2 /A1.0 and 3/A1.0.
During the demolition phase for the new wall construction, it was discovered that a steel grid support
system existed over the areas for the new partition walls at the 14 foot level. The existing interior
partition walls and ceilings in that area are supported off this steel grid. Because of the conflict of the
existing grid sections and concerns of Washington Square in connecting the new walls to the bottom
side of the existing roof decking at the 29 foot level, it was decided to connect the top of the new
demising walls directly to the bottom side of the existing steel support grid system in a similar fashion
as the existing construction.
The existing steel support system consists of steel channels that are 1 V2" deep and 1 /2" wide installed
perpendicular to each other to form a grid pattern. The channels are spaced approximately 42 to 48
inches on center each way. The channels are fastened to each other with screws where they
intersect. The channels are supported vertically with wires fastened at the channel intersections and
terminating on bottom side of the roof deck. The channel grid spans from wall to wall and is braced
laterally by the existing walls and structural steel framing. The channels are fastened at the ends
directly to the structural walls with screws.
The top track for the new wall is fastened to every steel channel member it crosses with (2) #8
screws. Please refer to the attached detail. We take no exception to the new wall connecting to the
existing steel channel grid at the 14 foot level. The existing grid system is adequate to brace the wall
for anticipated out -of -plane loads. All other wall detailing remains unchanged from the original
specifications.
