RE: Sharper Image, Located at Washington Square In Beaverton, Oregon
KGA Project No. 00 - 296
Dear Ron:
On September 21, 2000, I met with Bill Frenzel of Western Construction Company at the project
site. He identified where they wanted to cut a 2' -0" diameter opening in an existing concrete
masonry wall. The existing concrete masonry wall was currently acting as a spandrel that was
approximately 20' tall above the existing opening. The spandrel had been reinforced with external
metal added to the bottom and sides of the concrete masonry.
The new opening was to be located very near a column that was providing support for the concrete
masonry spandrel. It was Intended to be approximately 5'-0" above the bottom of the spandrel.
Structurally, this new opening should be acceptable, as the shear of the concrete masonry and the
bending capabilities of the concrete masonry will only be affected in a very minor way.
The second Issue we reviewed was the locations of additional mechanical equipment on the roof.
There was a 1,200 lb. make up air unit that was intended to be added to the roof. Initially, we
discussed locating it near an existing column; however, the Mall Manager Indicated he wanted to
re -use the existing curbs on the roof and utilize short, over -the -roof duct runs to existing openings
that were approximately 4' -0" from the existing curbs,
The existing curbs appeared to have supported a condenser previously, as they were two isolated
curbs. There was an adjacent location where two similar existing curbs were supporting a new
mechanical unit. The mechanical unit would be required to span across from one curb to the other.
I would additionally recommend that there be four (4) %" x 4" lag bolts used to anchor the contact
points of the new mechanical equipment to the existing curbs. I have Included our calculation
indicating that the mechanical equipment should not overload the existing roof.
In addition, it appears as though the original condenser was removed and, more than likely,
weighed as much or more than the new, proposed make up air unit. Therefore, with the above -
described anchorage the new unit should be able to utilize the existing curbs.
I trust the above information is satisfactory for your needs. If you have any questions, please call
our office.
Sincerely,
Rick E. Jones, , .
