L ENGINEERING O ir MEMORANDUM 7 DATE: July 5, 2007 TO: Dan Nelson "— City of Tigard Plans Examiner Q BY: Dave Sandahl, PE 6 I. l SUBJECT: Shear wall nailing ( 4 PROJECT: Holiday Inn Express (North Building) - Tigard PROJECT NO.: A06214 There are no construction documents of the original building. The building is sheathed with 5/8 inch gypboard on the upper two (2) levels and 3/8 inch plywood with 8d's at 6 and 12 over gypboard on the lower level. The existing gypboard sheathing is either missing, damaged, or misinstalled during the current construction. In an attempt to repair the existing sheathing and to meet current code, we suggest adding'/: inch plywood over the existing gypboard and nailing with 10d nails as indicated below. Some plywood has already been fastened over the existing gypboard with 6d ringshank siding nails and the modification is also described below. At new plywood installations (South East wall line): 3r floor: 1 /z" plywood over 5/8" gyp with 10d common nails at 6° o/c edge and 12° field. 2 " floor: '/2" plywood over 5/8" gyp with 10d common nails at 4° o/c edge • and 12" field. 1s floor: Nail existing' /" plywood over 5/8" gypboard with 10d common nails at 6" o/c edge and 12" field. These are in addition to the existing 8d nails. At existing plywood installations (North and East wall lines): r floor: Add 10d common nails at 12" o/c edge and 12" field. 2 " Add 10d common nails at 8" o/c edge and 12° field. 1S f loor: Nail existing W plywood over 5/8" gypboard with 10d common nails at 6" o/c edge and 12" field.
