VAN DOMELEN, PE. JAMES E KNAUF PE April 21, 1998 GREGCRYJ, 9LEFGEN, PE JOHN T BROOKS I -AVL!N G. KEMP, PE Mr. Guy Belt KIMBERLY A. SCHOENFELDER Pacific Roofing Company P.O. Box 1728 Beaverton, Oregon 97075 Regarding: Roof Inspection of Building at 9540 SW Tigard Avenue, Tigard, Oregon Dear Guy: At your request, we have investigated the roof of the structure located at the above mentioned address and have analyzed the existing roof structural members for their capacity to support the proposed new 4 ply roof. We understand that the existing roof has one 4 ply roof in place of which we have assumed to weigh approximately 1.7 pound per square foot. Similarly, we have assumed the weight of the new 4 ply roof to be 1.7 pounds per square foot. Per our conversations prior to this investigation you indicated that the existing roof would remain with a new 4 ply roof added. During the observation of the condition of the existing roof on Thursday, April 16, 1998 you mentioned that the existing roof may need to be replaced. It was your opinion that originally you thought that any bubbling of the top layer of the roof could be scraped off with a shovel prior to installing the new roof. After viewing the condition of the existing roof, however, you indicated that the bubbling of the roof was excessive and that the existing roof may need to be completely replaced. The calculations provided in this roof investigation are made with the assumption that the existing roof will remain, The roof structure is adequate in either scenario to support the new roof loads, but we ask that you please notify VLMK Consulting Engineers should the decision be made to remove the entire existing roof. This particular building was one that VLMK Consulting Engineers designed in July of 1978. Original drawings and calculations were available for use in this investigation. Our investigation consisted of a visual observation of the existing roof structure with a representative sample of the existing sub- purlins, purling, girders, and columns being visually observed for conformance to the original construction drawings. All of the structural roof elements appeared to be in conformance with the original drawings and as specified. The existing calculations were reviewed and supplemented as required to verify that the existing structure as designed is adequate for the additional roof dead load. Per the existing drawings the existing roof structure is as follows: The roof consists of V2 Douglas Fir Plywood sheathing spanning over 2 x 4 Douglas Fir #1 sub - purlins spaced at 24" on center. The purlins span approximately 20 feet between glue - laminated girders. The original design drawings indicate that these purlins are 4 x 14 Douglas Fir 41 with an option to use 6 x 12 Douglas Fir #1. The actual size of these purlins could not be accurately identified. The glue- laminated girder system is a cantilever and drop -in system that utilizes 5 -1/8" x 27" and 3 -1/8" x 18" (Fb = 2,400 psi) glue - laminated beams. The actual sizes of these beams also could not accurately be verified. e' C A u M APR 21 '98 07:52AM VLMK ENGINEERS P.3%9 Mr. Guy Belt Pacific Roofing Company April 20, 1998 Page 2 The roof structure was analyzed with full existing dead load, added dead load due to the new 4 ply roof, and 25 pounds per square foot snow load in accordance with the 1996 State of Oregon Structural Specialty Code. Based on our analysis, the roof structural elements have sufficient capacity to support the addition of the new roof. Our analysis of this structure consisted only of an investigation of the gravity load capacity of the roof structure. No investigation of the building was made to determine the lateral load capacity of the structure nor was any analysis made of the lateral force resisting elements. I have enclosed a copy of our structural calculations for this roof investigation. Please call me at (503) 222 - 4453 should you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns regarding this investigation. Best Regards, VLMK Consulting Engineers (0 Ep "0%, 7,352 ,- Ke . apan,P.E.
