DURHAM - 16721 - FIRE ALARM SYSTEM
1.6 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The existing system uses closed loop initiating device circuits with individual zone supervision, individual
indicating appliance circuit supervision, incoming and standby power supervision. Included in this system is the
control panel. manual-pull stations, automatic fire detectors. and indicating bells. Provide new hardwired devices,
wiring, connections to devices, outlet boxes, junction boxes, and all other necessary material for a complete
operating system which are connected and supervised from the existing fire alarm system.
Alternate Number 4 will include all work associated with the installation of a new analog addressable fire alarm
panel, addressable devices. wiring, connections to devices, outlet boxes, junction boxes, and all other necessary
material for a complete operating system.
All panels and peripheral devices shall be the standard product of a single manufacturer and shall display the
manufacturer's name on each component. The catalog numbers specified under this section are those of Simplex
Time Recorder Co., unless indicated otherwise, and constitute the type, product quality, material, and desired
operating features. i2= # •z' /,. t. .
Acceptable manufacturers: Simplex Time Recorder Co., Faraday. Gamewell, Fire Control Instruments (FCI),
Cerberus Pyrotronics, or approved.
1.7 OPERATION
All doors normally held open by door control devices shall release upon AC power failure.
The system alarm operation subsequent to the alarm activation of any manual station, automatic detection
device, or sprinkler switch shall be as follows:
All audible alarm indicating appliances shall sound a uniform code 3 temporal pattern until silenced by the alarm
silence switch at the Control Panel. The temporal pattern shall consist of any appropriate sound, keyed 1/2 to 1
second "on ". 1/2 to 1 second "off', 1/2 to 1 second "on ", 1/2 second "off', 1/2 to I second "on" and 2 1/2 seconds
"off' with timing tolerances of + 25% repeated for not less than 3 minutes.
All doors normally held open by door control devices shall release.
A supervised signal to notify the local fire department or an approved central station shall be activated. To
accommodate and facilitate job site changes the type of "city connection circuit" shall be on site configurable to
provide either a "reverse polarity ". "local energy ", "shunt" or dry contact connection.
The mechanical controls shall activate the air handling systems per life safety specification, NFPA 101.
The associated initiating device circuit red LED shall flash on the control panel and the remote annunciator until
the alarm has been silenced at the control panel (or the remote annunciator). Once silenced, this same LED shall
latch on. A subsequent alarm received from another zone after silencing shall flash the subsequent zone alarm
LED on the control panel.
The activation of any system smoke detector shall initiate an alarm verification operation whereby the panel will
reset the activated detector and wait for a second alarm activation. If. within one (1) minute after resetting, a
second alarm is reported from the same or any other smoke detector, the system shall process the alarm as
described previously. If no second alarm occurs within one minute the system shall resume normal operation. The
alarm verification shall operate only on smoke detector alarms. Other activated initiating devices shall be
processed immediately.
The actuation of the program "Test Set -up" switch at the control panel shall activate the "Walk Test" mode
of the system which shall cause the following to occur:
The city connection circuit shall be disconnected.
Control relay functions shall be bypassed.
The control panel shall show a trouble condition.
The alarm activation of any initiation device shall cause the audible signals to pulse one round of code identifying
the initiation circuit (e.g.: an activated smoke detector connected to Zone 4 shall pulse the audible signals 4 times
in rapid succession).
The panel shall automatically reset itself after code is complete.
Any momentary opening of an initiating or indicating appliance circuit wiring shall cause the audible signals to
sound for 4 seconds to indicate the trouble condition.

•
1.8 SUPERVISION
The existing system contains nine (9) (Class B Style B) zones. Independently supervised initiation circuits so that
a fault in any one zone shall not affect any other zone. The alarm activation of any initiation circuit shall not
prevent the subsequent alarm operation of any other initiation circuit. Provide seventeen (17) additional (Class B
Style B) zones to existing fire alarm panel as shown on the Drawings.
1.9 ALTERNATE NUMBER 4 - SUPERVISION
Provide a new analog addressable panel and addressable initiation devices for new and existing areas. Replace
existing panel and devices with new panel and devices installed at previous locations.

(horns) (bells) (chimes) (and flashing alarm lamps). Disarrangement conditions of any circuit shall not affect the
operation of other circuits.
All auxiliary manual controls shall be supervised so that all switches must be returned to the normal automatic
position to clear system trouble.
Each independently supervised circuit shall include a discrete amber "Trouble" LED to indicate disarrangement
conditions per circuit.
The incoming power to the system shall be supervised so that any power failure must be audibly and visually
indicated at the control panel. A green "Power on" LED shall be displayed continuously while incoming power is
present.
The system batteries shall be supervised so that a low battery condition or disconnection of the battery shall be
audibly and visually indicated at the Control Panel.
The system expansion modules connected by ribbon cables shall be supervised for module placement. Should a
module become disconnected from the C.P.U. the system trouble signal must sound.
