Rockery
The proposed 6 to 8 foot high, rockery wall should be constructed in accordance with the
following.
• We recommend the proposed rockery be built to support a slope in the Medium Stiff to
Hard Clayey Silt and or weathered basalt. The rockery should be built in accordance
with attach design. -
• The rockery should consist of a rock wall that is at least 3 feet thick. The majority of the
boulders used to build the rockery should be a minimum of 2 foot in diameter. Smaller
• diameter boulders may be used to fill gaps and promote the fit of the larger stones. The
first row of boulders should be embedded at least 1.0 foot in to the soil at the base of the
wall.
• The rockery wall should be backfilled with a free draining 3/4 inch minus crushed rock.
The backfill should be compacted to at least 95 percent of the Modified Proctor
laboratory maximum (ASTM D 1557 or AASHTO T -180). A 3inch diameter perforated
plastic pipe should be laid at the base of the fill behind the first row of boulders. The
drain is not expected to have a maximum rate of more than 1 gallon per minute and
therefore we recommend it be directed to discharge on the site.
• The rockery boulders should be fresh black basalt. The boulders should give a sharp
ring when they arc struck with a hammer.

O The rockery should be constructed with a face inclination of 1H:6V.
• Rockeries are not structural retaining walls and therefore they should not be relied on in
th same manner as retaining walls. Rockeries are erosion protection for slopes that are
stable. Rockeries require periodic maintenance to repair frost and potential creep
movements. Rockeries must be protected from surface water run off.

The above site work permit application has been recently submitted for the construction of a rockery wall in the
City of Tigard. As the engineer of record for this project, please include the following items in your final structural
observation report for the retaining wall project located at 13991 SW Ridgefield In. in Tigard Oregon.
1). Soil compaction for the placement of the base course of retaining wall boulders.
2). Placement of drain lines at the base of the wall.
3). Granular fill placement and compaction behind the wall.
3). Final acceptance of wall construction including any required slope set - backs.
