GENERAL: j■ • , • •q. . The products covered are horizontal cylindrical steel tanks designed for aboveground storage of flammable liquids at atmospheric pressure. The tanks may be provided with an integral li steel foundation described herein. They are for use with only non- corrosive stable liquids that have a specific gravity not exceeding that of water. • i Details not specifically covered in the description section of this Follow -Up Service Procedure shall conform with the current edition of the Standard of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. 1 for Steel Aboveground Tanks for Flammable and Combustible Liquids, UL 142. A copy of this Standard is included herein and forms a part .� of this Procedure. The tanks are intended for stationary installation in accordance with the Flammable and Combustib_e Liquids Code of the National Fire Protection Association, NFPA ::o. 30. 1 The tanks are fabricated, inspected, and tested for leakage before shipment from the factory as completely assembled vessels. CONSTRUCTION DETAILS: General (Horizontal Tanks) - The tanks (both primary and secon ara y) shall be constructed in accordance with the current 1 edition of UL Standard UL 142 and the following description and illustrations. 1 Inner Tank - The inner tank shall comply with all aspects with UL 142 and the following: Flat unflanged heads shall not be used. I Outer Shell Wrap - The outer shell wrap shall be separate from but make intimate contact with the inner tank. Exception - The outer shell wrap may extend a maximum of 8 in. past the outside of the inner tank head provided the portion not in intimate contact with the inner tank conforms to the material and construction requirements specified in UL 142. The minimum steel thickness for the outer tank which is in intimate contact with . Outer Head Wrap - The outer head wrap shall be separate from the inner tank. It shall completely cover the inner head. Flat, unflanged heads shall not be used. The outer head wrap shall be continuously welded to the outer shell wrap. L.,. Provision for Venting - Each primary containment tank and each compartment of a compartment tank shall have provision for II both normal and emergency venting. The interstitial (annular) space of a secondary containment tank shall have provision for emergency venting. 11 A vent opening shall be in addition to the fill, withdrawal, and liquid level gauge openings. The vent opening is to be above the highest liquid lead. The wetted area of a horizontal tank is calculated on the basis of 75 percent of the total exposed area. A value, to the nearest whole number, for wetted areas of flat- headed horizontal tanks of various diameters and lengths are included in the Standard. Additional Openings - Separate openings may be provided in the top of the tank above the normal maximum liquid level for connection of fill piping and monitoring as indicated on the respective illustrations. All openings shall employ fittings constructed in accordance with the Standard. 1 Joints and Seams'- Joints and seams shall be in accordance with the Standard as shown in the respective illustrations detailing the tank constructions. Provisions for Monitoring - Each tank shall be provided with a standard pipe fitting (per UL 142) that allows access to the space bounded by the inner tank and the outer wrap. An externally mounted monitoring access shall enter the outer wrap not more than 2 in. from the tank bottom. Externally mounted monitoring access fittings shall not be used when outer head wrap does not make intimate contact with inner tank.
