The plan review was performed under the State of Oregon Structural Specialty Code (OSSC)
2004 edition; and the State of Oregon Fire Code (OFC) 2004 edition. The following items
remain and are required prior to the issuance of the Rack Storage Permit.
GENERAL
• Clarify the classification of the commodities being stored in accordance with section
2303 OFC.
• Type of fire suppression system. (See comment regarding Sprinkler System Analysis)
• Location of valves controlling the water supply of ceiling and in -rack sprinklers.
• Dimension and location of transverse and longitudinal flue spaces in accordance with
Table 2308.3 OFC
SPRINKLER SYSTEM ANALYSIS
• A sprinkler system analysis shall be submitted to the City of Tigard, Building
Division prior to approval of the Rack Storage Permit. The analysis shall provide
hydraulic calculations verifying that the existing sprinkler system has the required
flow for the commodity being stored. FYI In rack sprinklers are required for the
project and were not indicated on the previous Fire Sprinkler Permit. Revisions to the
existing sprinkler permit will be required or a new sprinkler permit will be required.
When submitting revised drawings or additional information, please attach a copy of the

RE: Crown Carpets — Rack Permit
Permit Number. BOP 2005 -00238
CIDA Project Number. 040103.01
Dear Brian:
Doug Lepper of Crown Carpets has requested that CIDA provide you with further explanation
and information on the racking at the remodeled Crown Carpets location per your request on
June 10, 2005.
Following is the response to the High -Pile Combustible Storage Chapter 23 requirements included
within your plan checklist:
I. Per your comment, NorthWest Handling Systems (NWHS) provided the locations and
dimensions of the high -piled storage areas. We have also included a copy of their sheet for
ease of reference.
2. The usable storage height for each storage area is 16' high. This has been depicted on a
drawing called racking elevation (Sheet .1). We believe this was a supplemental drawing
recently supplied by NWHS, but we have also included it within this package for ease of
reference.
3. Per your comment, NWHS provided information to establish the number of tiers within
each rack.
4. The distance from the top of the carpet being stored to the sprinkler deflector is 8' -0 ".
We believe this was a supplemental drawing recently supplied by NWHS, but we have also
included it within this package for ease of reference.
5. NWHS overlaid the CIDA floor plan with racking and dimensions. It is our understanding
that this sheet was revised and resubmitted recently. The aisles as shown are 24' -5 ", 23' -2"
and 8' -10 ".
6. Not applicable.
•
ARCHITECTURE 0 ENGINEERING • PLANNING • INTERIORS • LANDSCAPE
7. The . locations of the commodities are illustrated on the supplemental drawing supplied by
NWHS sheet I. The commodities are classified within Class III commodities, rugs without
foam backing and Class IV, linoleum products.
8. There are no commodities which are banded or encapsulated.
9. Per your comment the location of the fire access door has been provided.
10. The sprinkler design criteria at the roof is for High Pile storage with .6/2000 square foot for
Group A plastics. The sprinkler designer designed the system to a "worst case scenario" to
elevate future required modifications to the sprinkler system for future racking. Attached
please find information provided by the sprinkler designer, Patriot Fire, on the design
criteria.
I 1. Attached please . find the location provided by the sprinkler designer, Patriot Fire, locating
the riser control valve.
12. Not applicable.
13. Per Table 2308.3, in a m ggle -row rack application, the system is required to have a4"
transverse flue space and not required to have a longitudinal flue space. The racks have 3"
tube steel at each of the four corners to provide a separation of the commodities from
rack to rack, creating a transverse flue space within the racking system. In addition, due to
the nature of the rolls of carpet, the separation between commodities at the tube steels
easily exceeds the minimum requirements. r1 argyle. kr ►-ac.l +>
110 u—) b" c.. e- beituc..r` ¥$.L) -s •
I have included the hydraulic calculations provided by Patriot Fire that verify the existing design of
the sprinkler system was designed for high -pile storage, and to provide coverage for the products
stored within Crown Carpets.
The racking is constructed without solid shelving in accordance with IFC 2308.2.2 Exception I.
The shelving is constructed of 2x4 wood studs laid flat with 5 I A " spacing between face of stud to
face of stud. In accordance with IFC Table 2308.3 and NFPA 13 Table 12.3.2.1.2, the rack storage
is not required to have an in -rack sprinkler system.
