PROGRAM AND ENDORSING THE :fNC1-USION AND LCEGH PR:LORIT"-IZA"L:LON OF IMPROVFMENI-t� TO
THE HIGHWAY 99W/HIGHWAY 18 CORRIDOR FROM THE MEIROPOL-11AN PORTLAND AREA TO -THE-
COAST.
HECOAST.
WHEREAS, the State of Oregon has identified the need for high impact,

�..,�."�......:.___ �mproveme ahways accessing the State's major recreational
and tourism centers, as a means of spurring tourism, economic development, and
prosperity statewide; and
WHEREAS, the formal adoption of the "Access Oregon" program will occur through
the Oregon Department of Transportation's Six Year Highway Plan; and
WHEREAS, the Highway 99W/Highway 18 cor•r•idor• is the main tourist route: between
the Portland metropolitan area and major coastal tourism centers, including
Lincoln City; and
WHEREAS, the Southwest Corridor Study recommends highway improvements between
I-5 and Highway 99W in the vicinity of Tualatin and Sherwood; and
WHEREAS, the Council has previously endorsed the conclusions and
recommendations of the Southwest Corridor• Study; and
WHEREAS, an improved connection between 1--5 and Highway 99W is expected to
reduce traffic congestion in the Tigard area; and
WHEREAS, existing traffic congestion increases travel time for all highway
use+-s and discourages tourist use of the Highway 99W/Highway 18 corridor.
NOW, THEREFORE:., BE Il- RESOLVED by the Tigard City Council that:
Section 1: The Council acknowledges the importance of the "Access Oregon"
program and strongly recommends that the i.mpr•ovement of the
Highway 99W/Highway 18 corridor- be placed as the highest
priority in the program.
Section 2: The Council recommends that the first priority be given to
providing an improved highway connection between Interstai.e 5
and Highway 99W in the vicinity of Tualatin and Sherwood in
accordance with the recommendations of the Southwest corridor
Study.
