FIELD OBSERVATION REPORT
DATES COVERED: January 9, 2003
PROJECT: Erickson Heights Subdivision - Lot 5
ADDRESS: 10788 SW Kable Street, Tigard, Oregon
BY: Debra L. Doyle, G.I.T.
WEATHER: Overcast, windy, -38 °F
PURPOSE OF VISIT: Rockery Wall Observation
Carlson Geotechnical (CGT) staff Debra Doyle arrived on site at 0800 hours as requested by Steve Hunt of Renaissance
Homes (RH)_ The purpose of my visit was to observe the removal and rebuilding of the two upper rockery walls located at
the back of lot 5. I met with Keith and Aaron of Curtis Heintz Excavation (CHE) on site. The rockery walls will be removed
and reconstructed in sections due to space limitations because of the existing structures on site.
Two more sections of wall 2, approximately 50 feet total, were removed and reconstructed during my visit today. Upon
removal of each section, the original subgrade was probed. There was no keyway beneath the original rockery wall. A
keyway was excavated to 1.5 feet, and the newly exposed subgrade was also probed. The keyway was then covered with 6
inches of 1 -1/2 inch drain rock, and lightly compacted using the backhoe bucket. As each section of wall was rebuilt, each
row of boulders was backfilled with 1 -1/2 " drain rock, and compacted with the backhoe bucket. The reconstructed wall is
approximately 4 feet in height and generally has a batter of 1 H:4V.
After each section of rockery wall 2 was removed, I probed the original subgrade, and then the 1.5 -foot deep keyway using a
'/2 inch steel foundation rod. On the original subgrade I could penetrate up to 1 foot. The keyway was over excavated to 2.5
feet. I robed the over excavated keyway and could not penetrate the subgrade more than 1 inch in any location, indicating
stiff conditions_ There was the same 4" minus rock in the soils in this 50 foot section as was reported in the field report dated
1- 08 -03.
The owner of Lot 5 requested that the upper rockery wall not be reconstructed so that there would be more yard. I
recommended to Steve (RH) that the ground surface be horizontally level for 5 feet from the deck footings outward, then a
2H:1 V slope to the top of the new rockery wall 2 can be constructed_
I left the site at 1415 hours due to a maintenance problem with the backhoe.
Arrived back on site at 1530 hours. At the end of the day, only the first course of boulders was placed in the keyway of the
remaining 10 feet of the reconstructed rockery wall.
Based on my observations and probing, the rockery wall reconstructed to this point has been prepared in general accordance
with project plans, and our recommendations.
I left the site at 1715 hours.

Final Rockery Wall Observation
Erickson Heights Subdivision Lot 5

CGT Project: G0101867.E
The purpose of this letter is to provide you with information on the reconstructed rockery
walls in the backyard area of lot number 5 of the Erickson Heights Subdivision in Tigard,
Oregon.
At your request, we observed the reconstruction of the two upper rockery walls to
evaluate whether they were constructed in accordance with the standards of practice for
rockery wall construction, our standard recommendations for rockery wall construction,
and the rockery wall design provided by Carlson Testing, Inc. (CTI) for the subdivision
walls_
Only one of the original two upper rockery walls was reconstructed. At the homeowners
request, the upper rockery wall was removed, but not reconstructed. In its place, the
upper portion of the backyard was regraded to CTI's specification.
Based on our observations, the one upper rockery wall on lot 5 was reconstructed in
accordance with CTI's recommendations and the standards of practice for construction
of rockery walls.
Please contact us if you have any questions.

PURPOSE OF VISIT: Rockery Wall Observation
Carlson Geotechnical (CGT) staff Debra Doyle arrived on site at 1500 hours as requested by Steve Hunt of
Renaissance Homes (RH). The purpose of my visit was to observe the regarding of the backyard of lot 5, I met
with Keith Curtis Heintz Excavation (CHE) on site
As requested by the homeowner, the upper rockery wall (wall 1) had not been rebuilt. In its place, the yard had
been graded to conform to our recommendation to Steve (RH) that the ground surface be horizontally level for 5
feet from the deck footings outward, then a 2H:1 V slope to the top of the new rockery wall 2 can be constructed.
I did not observe the regarding, but returned at completion of the task and took measurements. The level area
from the deck footings (10H :1 V) and the slope (2.7H:1 V) were measured and found to be within the
recommended parameters.
Based on my observations the regarded soil has been prepared in general accordance with project plans, and our
recommendations.
I left the site at 0910 hours.

requested by Steve Hunt of Renaissance Homes (RH). The purpose of my visit was to observe the
rockery wall located at the back of lot 5 in the Erickson Heights Subdivision.
At the time of my visit, the proposed residence was In the final stages of framing, I observed that the
residence was set back from the rockery walls from 15 to 26 feet. I also observed that there were five
rockery walls at the back of the lot approximately four feet high and stepped up at approximately a 4-
foot setback from each other_ I also observed that there are rook emirs that run from the top of the
highest wall down through the walls to gain access to the bottomback of the lot. Steve Informed me
that the bottom two rockery walls had been backfilled and tes by COT in accordance with the project
plans.
The rockery walls at the back of lot 5 are not structural walls end should be used for landstoping
purposes only_ NI walls I observed at the back of the lot veto not over four feet high and therefore
were not engineered walls_

from 8 to 10 inches. I probed the keyway and could not penetrate the subgrade more than one inch in any
location, indicating stiff conditions.
There was some 4" minus rock in the soils approximately two feet behind the original footprint of rockery wall 2.
Aaron (CHE) stated that they believed there was a storm drain installed at depth, and had been backfilled with the
4" minus rock. It had not been used as backfill behind the original rockery wall 2. There was also some minor
ground water seepage approximately in the same general location as the base of the 4" minus rock_

FIELD OBSEIVATION REPORT
DATES COVERED: May 15. 2002
PROJECT: Erickson Heights Subdivision • Lot 5
ADDRESS: 10788 SW Keble Street, Tigard, Oregon
BY: Robert Russell
WEATHER: Partially cloudy, --55 °F
PURPOSE OF VISIT: Construction Observation
Carlson Geotechnical (CGT) Geotechnical Staff, Robert Russell, arrived on site at 0930 hours as
requested by Steve Hunt of Renaissance Homes (RH). The purpose of my visit was to observe footing
subgrades conditions for lot number 5 of Erickson Heights Subdivision,
At the time of my visit, the proposed residence had been ixc3vated 'down to footing subgrade elevation
and the corners of the footings had been staked. The kilis.,consisted of brown silt with trace gravels
and cobbles. I observed that the subgrade soils were relatively free of organic matter or other
deleterious materials. I also observed that the lot slopes down hill from north to south at less than a
21.1: 1V and the front half of the proposed residence had been benched from north to south.
I probed the footing subgrade soils with a W diameter steel foundation rod. in general I was unable to
penetrate the subgrade soils more then 1 inch with moderate pressure, indicating stiff to very stiff soil
conditions. A
I observed at the front middle of the proposed residence (north) a 6 -foot vertical out face and one
footing with a :6iin&i setback from a 2 -foot vertical cut face, above the 6 -foot vertical cut face. Per a
phone call from Steve Hunt of Renaissance Homes I understand that a retaining wall is proposed at the
base of the 6 -foot vertical cut face and the footings will also, be thickened at this location.
•
Based on my observations, the footing subgrade soils observed today, have been prepared In general
accordance with our recommendations.
I left the site at 0855 hours.
