• Building Codes
We consider ourselves a custom design and installation company and are very aware of the building code requirements for railings.
All of our railings conform to the 2006 IRC and IBC. These are the International Residential Code and International Building Code
respectively. Virtually all building departments follow these codes. However it is possible that a local jurisdiction may write a more
restrictive code for their area. Knowing and meeting any local codes are not the responsibility of RailPro. It is the responsibility of the
customer to inform us of anything outside of the two codes noted above.
Here are some of the most basic code requirements for residential railing.
1. Any walking surface greater than 30" off the ground requires a guardrail
2. The rail height must be a minimum of 36" from the deck surface
3. There should be no opening that can pass a 4" sphere through the railing
4. Stairs with more than 3 risers must have a handrail
The codes are quite extensive and often confusing and your local inspector may not be well versed in the areas of the code that
apply to railing or is working to the 1997 UBC or the 2003 IRC instead of the most recent 2006 IRC. Or perhaps he's applying the
IBC code to your home vs. the IRC. RailPro is well versed in the most recent codes and can help you work through any issues with
the building inspector.
When we quote your project, it will always be for a code compliant installation. If you want something outside of the code we'll
require a signed waiver for our protection.

Post Attachments
All our rail styles can be attached either to the surface or the fascia of the deck. There are some details that you need to be aware of
to insure a safe and attractive installation.
COurfa`ce_Mnu`ntT. This is the most common and least expensive attachment. It is usually the choice for level wood or composite
decks. We require that you provide 3" of solid structural blocking to screw into. In the case of composites this must be 3" under the
composite board.
(• Waterproof Decks - If you have a waterproof deck, our first recommendation is that you consider fascia mounting. However, if this
is not possible we have several options for you to consider to protect the integrity of the waterproofing. Please open this Tech
Bulletin for more details.
Mounting on Tile - We can mount to a tile surface but we do not recommend the practice. We require a signed waiver regarding
any damage to the tile during installation or any time later. There is always the possibility that tile can crack.
There are a couple of ways to avoid mounting through the tile. First would be to install the railing first and tile up to the base plates.
Another way would be to install a raised footing for the post to mount on.
asciapcdount.�bis is most commonly used when there is a waterproof deck surface involved that you do not want to penetrate.
We can mount to the fascia as long as certain conditions exist. These are:

There is 6" of flat surface under the flashing;
There is 3" of solid structural blocking at the attachment points;
There are no other obstructions in the way, most commonly gutters.
Also please note that we can not fascia mount any of our newel posts with the exception of the 2 1/2" post.

Rail Termination
When the rail conies to the end usually at the house, you have to decide how you want to terminate the railing.
Wall Termination - The most common and least expensive way to terminate your railing is to attach the top and bottom rail to the
house. Most of the time there is a trim board at the house to attach the rail with a wall mount. While it is not required for the strength
or safety of the railing, attaching the top rail will take any flex out of the system. If it's possible we recommend it.
C "Post There may he a reason that you can not or choose not to terminate the railing to the house. In this case we will
terminate the railing with a post. This post must be within 4" of the house to keep your railing in code. This will add a bit more cost to
the railing as the posts are one of the more expensive elements of the railing.

Fasteners
All the fasteners used by RailPro are high grade stainless steel. This combined with the aluminum railing will provide you with a
complete system that can not rust. While others may use coated or painted screws to cut cost we don't as we have seen these rust
over the years. Rust will never happen with a RailPro installed rail.
All of our fasteners come in mill finish. While some colored stainless screws exist, RailPro does not offer these. It is our experience
that the paint chips when driving the screws and we think it is unsightly to have the chipped inconsistent looking screws vs. a
uniform look to all the screws.
Some of the standard screws we use are listed below.
Pan head square drive screws
#14 x 3" Used for mounting surface posts to the deck into blocking
#14 x 2" Used for attaching top rail wall mounts to the house
#12 x 1 1/2" Used for attaching the top rail to the post, also for attaching the bottom rail wall mount to the post or house
#12 tek Self driving screw for attaching bottom rail to wall mount. also for attaching the post mount to the post
Hex head lag bolt
1/4" x 4" Used for mounting fascia post into blocking, also for surface mounting through composite decking into blocking

Glass Details
Tempered Glass - All glass for our railing systems is fully tempered. This is crucial for the strength and safety of the railing. There is
no alternative glass type appropriate for this application. Tempered glass is the same type of glass that you'll find in your shower
door, patio door or side car window. It has tremendous strength against impact. As testament, tempered glass is used in hockey
rinks. If it does break it literally explodes into tiny shards that may cause small cuts but won't create a huge blade to cut off an arm.
Thickness - The standard glass for full frame rail is 1/4" thick. We use 3/8" thick glass for our topless glass rail.
Edgework - RailPro provides all its glass with the exposed edges in a high polish. While others will cut corners with a rough seam
or less expensive ground edge, RailPro only provides the best. On 1/4" glass we provide a pencil polish and on the 3/8" glass it's a
beautiful furniture grade flat polish.
Colors - All glass conies standard as clear. There are numerous tinted glasses that can be used. The most common are Bronze
and Gray tints. Also available are Green. Blue and reflective glass but these are not common.
Privacy Glass - We also have a glass called Matelux which is often used in privacy applications. This glass is translucent, that is it
allows light through but not vision. It looks very similar to sandblasted glass but is quite different. See the explanation below in the
Glass Rail Warnings section.

Glass Rail Warnings
This section provides some things to watch out for in glass rail applications.
Plastics Infills - Plastic is not a usable alternative as it has too much flex and can be pushed out of the opening From a practical
t- side all plastics will scratch more easily than glass and are actually quite a bit more expensive.
Sandblasted Glass - Sandblasted glass is actually porous as you've created a rough surface that can adsorb debris, i.e. bird
droppings. This will permanently stain the glass.
Spandral Glass - This is glass with an applied glass frit baked on the glass surface. This has the same problems as sandblasted
glass. In addition it is very difficult to get an even surface coating with this product.
Laminated Glass - This is an improper application as the edge of laminated glass should not be exposed to the elements as
delaminating could occur. Also laminated glass is very susceptible to cracks running, i.e. your car windshield is laminated glass.

Mounting to Waterproof Decks
Mounting the rail — We believe that the most important element in preventing water infiltration
is securing the railing to a solid surface. The system is only as good as what we mount to.
For example, when we mount our post onto concrete and apply a standard load to the top of the
post there is virtually no deflection. Structurally the post is solid. This means that if the post is
mounting on a deck, any load applied to the post is transferred directly to the connection to the deck.
If there is inadequate blocking then there will be flexing at that connection and you have the
possibility of breaking any /all the seals.
Screws — We typically use a #14 x 3" stainless steel pan head square drive screw. We believe that
one of the most important prevention steps is the mounting of the railing into 3" of solid blocking.
Without solid blocking, all other waterproofing steps can be rendered worthless as all of these
depend on maintaining a seal. If the base plate is not securely anchored to prevent any "rocking ",
that seal has a much higher possibility of being broken
Screw Caulking — The holes for the screws are predrilled with a 3/16" drill bit to about 2" in
depth. We then dip the screw into polyurethane sealant filling the threads with sealant before
installing the screws. This provides more seal between the wood and screw threads. It also fills the
hole in the base plate with sealant and seals around the top shank of the screw and screw head.
Washer /Gasket — We use a special stainless steel washer that has a bit of a crown at the hole.
There is neoprene that is adhered to one side of this washer. It is placed on the screw and as the
screw is cinched down this washer flattens out and forms a seal.
Base Plate Gasket — We use an EPDM gasket under the base plate. This gasket is sized to be
1/8" less than the base plate. This under sizing provides a "channel" under the base plate to act a
"key" if you choose to apply sealant around the base plate. The gasket also provides additional
sealing around the screw.
For the slope of the waterproof deck, we have a special wedge shape gasket that will adjust for a
' /a" per foot slope. This eliminates the use of any shims to level the post.
The gaskets work best on a smoother surface like metal flashing or a nontextured waterproof
surface where compressing the gasket will fill in voids.
Base Plate Caulking — Typically we do not caulk around the base plate as we believe that the
steps taken above provide adequate protection. In addition if some how moisture did make it below
the base plate, a bead of caulk would seal in the moisture. Sealed moisture is the worst condition you
could create regarding structural damage.
Mounting pedestal — An additional safety option is to use a ' /2" composite board pedestal base
under the base plate and gasket. In the best situation, this is applied to the deck surface at the post
position before the final coat of waterproofing. The bottom is covered with polyurethane and it is
adhered to the deck surface. It is then drilled for the screws and you create a "sandwich" of post
base, gasket, composite pedestal, polyurethane and deck coating. What this creates is a raised
platform for the base plate so that water running by will not pool around the base plate.

3 Introduction
Intertek Testing Services NA Ltd. ( Intertek) personnel have conducted tests of Structural
Performance of Welded Picket system with fascia posts for Western Railco Products Ltd. The
railing system was evaluated for the ability to resist the loads specified in Section 1607.7 of the
2003 International Building Code, by following the methods outlined in ICC -ES AC 273,
"Acceptance Criteria for Handrails and Guards."
4 Materials and Methods
4.1. SAMPLE SELECTION
The components were sampled by Intertek representative Tommy Buchmann, at the Western
Railco manufacturing plant, as per ICC -ES AC 85. Components were assembled by Western
Railco staff and submitted for testing. The sample submitted was identified as the Welded
Picket System with Fascia posts..

4.2. SAMPLE DESCRIPTION
The railing system consisted of the following materials and connections:
Post: . Series 65 -S fascia "SuperPost" - 1 -5/8" x 1 -5/8" 6005A -T6 Aluminum
Post. A W/P Bottom Sleeve is welded to the post to attach the Welded
Picket Section..
Baseplate: 1 1/2 x 3 1/8 x 1/4 "" angle face plate welded to % inch mounting plate with
4 — 3/8" mounting holes
Top Rail: Series 2000S (Square) Top Rail - 42" high, 6063 -T Aluminum rail. The rail
has a 2.00" wide x 1.93" high cross - sectional profile.
Pickets: 5/8" x 5/8" square pickets spaced 4 -1/2" on center, individually spot -
welded to a top rail and bottom Punched W/P bottom rail;
Connections: 2000 Series Post Mount bracket is connected to the Top Rail with
2 -#8 x 3 A" stainless steel screws. The Top Rail is then fastened to the
Post with 2410 x 1" stainless steel screws.
The welded Picket bottom rail is fastened to the Post with 1410 x 1"
screw through the W/P Bottom Sleeve welded to the post.
Note: The post to sub - structure fastener evaluation is beyond the scope of this report. For
the test, 4 — 3/8" Grade 5 bolts on each post were used.

4.3. TEST PROCEDURES
As per Section 4.2 of ICC -ES AC 273, the following tests were conducted:
Section 4.2.1 General
One complete railing system, consisting of two posts, was tested at maximum spacing and in
the worst -case scenario.
Section 4.2.2 In -Fill Load Test
A load consisting of 125 lbs. was applied over one square foot (0.0929 m ^2) normal to the in -fill
in a worst -case scenario.
Section 4.2.3 Uniform Load Test
The top rail of the system was subjected to two separate tests where a maximum load of 125 plf
was applied vertically and horizontally. For purposes of this test, third point loading was
deemed and calculated to be equivalent to uniform loading.
Section 4.2.4 Concentrated Load Test
Two separate tests were conducted where the test load of 500 lbs. was applied at the center of
the top rail and end of the top rail adjacent to the post *. Deflection readings were recorded at
200 lbs**.
*Note: AC 273 specifies the load be applied at the top of the post. The load was actually loaded
three inches adjacent to the post to also evaluate the capability of the top rail to post
connection. The load was applied at the full 42" rail height, and was only three inches
from the post, so we consider this to sufficiently simulate a load applied directly at the
top of the post.
* *Note: Deflection readings also included the deflection of the posts.
5 Test Results
The product test results are shown in Table 1 below.
