Seismic Loading Parameters
Mr. Van Etten:
At the request of the Structural Engineer, Stapley Engineers, we are providing herein seismic
design loading parameters for the retaining wall design. At the time of the Geotechnical Report,
we were not aware of retaining walls as part of the project, and our report did not provide detailed
lateral pressure recommendations for retaining walls. We have been provided with the project
plans and specifications dated March 7, 2008 for review.
The foundation stem walls in some areas will act as retaining walls and are planned with a
maximum height of about 4 feet. For design of the retaining walls, we recommend using a uniform
seismic surcharge pressure of 20 psf or 5(pcf) *H for the seismic loading.
Please note that the foundation drains are not shown on the project plans. The design
assumptions should be reviewed to confirm whether the drained or undrained conditions were
considered as part of design. The seismic surcharge pressures provided above apply for either
condition.
Sincerely, 0 '
