ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
The former Charles Tigard house, built in 1909, is one and one half stories

�; Its, irregular roof line is formed at the intersection of the front '
gable with the hipped roof, main section of the house. The front (east)

gable has boxed eaves with returns, and an elaborately decorative jigsawn
and spindle bracket in the gable end. The entire roof surface is covered
With composition shingle, as are two hlp roof dormers projecting from

the north and south elevations. California beveled siding and corner
boards clad the exterior of the house.

Built in 1909, this was the second residence occupied by the Charles Tigard
family. The house was originally constructed on the corner of Gaarde Street
„' facing Pacific Highway. When the highway was enlarged, it was moved one block
west to the south side of Gaarde Street. It remained in this location until

purchased and moved to its current location in 1.980, by the Fesslerrs • .

' Wilson Tigard. With the help of his mother, Charles established the first general
store in the area. It eventually housed the first post office, started in
1886. He used the name Tigardville post office to honor his father, Wilson Tigard.
v;, A larger store was built across Pacific Highway on the NE corner of McDonald Street
1.,' in 1892. The first home of Charles and Rosa was connected to the north side of
the store building. It was moved east to McDonald Street and though it still �•
stands, the building has been significantly remodeled.
Charles Tigard was involved in many community activities aside from runni

store. He served in the Oregon State Legislature in 1886, and again in 1911. ;
The first telephone terminus was located in his store's Charles later helped •

organize the Mutual Telephone Company. He was President of the First Bank of
Tigard, President of the Grange Fire Relief Association, and a member of the East
"' Butte Grange. For his dedicated support of local education, he was commemorated

in the naming of C. F. Tigard Elementary School.

C. F. Tigard passed away in 1942; his wife Rosa remained in the house until her '
passing assin in 1975. The house was used as a rental until purchased and re-sited by
the Fesslers in 1980. In its new location, it has the same directional setting

its association with Charles F. Tigard, son of the City's namesake, and important ; '
in his own right as a contributing member of the community.
