RE: Overdriven Nails on Simpson Connectors IUS2.56111.88

A nail that is installed such that the head deforms the steel is considered overdriven. Care
should be taken to prevent overdriven nails in connectors. Simpson Strong -Tie has evaluated
the effect of overdriven nails in 14 to 18 gauge connectors. No load reductions apply due to
overdriven nails if all of the following conditions are met:
1) Connectors are limited to steel between 14 and 18 gauge.
2) The top of the nail head must not be driven beyond flush with the face of the connector. A
straight edge placed across the nail head should contact the nail head.
3) The nail must go through an existing fastener hole without enlarging it.
4) The steel around the hole must not be torn or damaged other than the denting caused by the
nail head.
At the above mentioned jobsites, several IUS2.56/11.88 are installed with 10d common nag
driven beyond flush with the face of the connectors. The steel around the nail holes under the
nail head was visually observed by Simpson Territory Representative, David Gilroy, and
determined no cracks or tearing were developed due to over -driven nails. For this installation
the I will achieve an allowable floor load of 800 lbs.
For future installation, Simpson Strong -Tie Company cannot support installations that do not
meet all of the above conditions. Our recommendation is to reduce the air pressure delivered to
the nail gun and not to over -drive the nails in the connector.
All information pertaining to the use and installation of Simpson Strong -Tie connectors found in
the current edition of the Wood Construction Connectors Catalog shall apply. If you have any
questions regarding this information, please contact the Engineering Department of Simpson
Strong -Tie at 1- 800 - 999 -5099.
Sincerely,
