ADDITION OF HVAC UNITS
Re: FIELD REVIEW OF IN PLACE HVAC UNITS AT METZGAR SCHOOL
Following our meeting at Metzgar School on Wednesday, 12/11/96, I reviewed our
recommendations for strengthening the structure. The HVAC units have not been placed at the
center of each classroom as shown on your layout drawings, rather they have been placed within
10 feet of the classroom sidewall. The columns supporting the roof structure are located in the
classroom walls. This location places less bending stress on the roof girder. Consequently:
1. No additional reinforcement is required at the glulam girders. The 1 %" micro -lam is not
required to be added at the glu -lam beam spanning the classrooms.
2. At the "Front" classrooms, the 4" x 5' /z' T &G roof sheathing is adequate to support the new
HVAC Units without any additional structure.
3. At the "Back" classrooms, the 3 1/4" x 8" purlins are adequate to support the new HVAC units
without any additional structural reinforcement. The 2 x 8 is not required to be added along
side the existing purlins. Note: The new HVAC units are shown to be 45" wide and the 3'/4" x
8" purlins are at 48" on center. If the new HVAC unit curbs bear directly on the purlins, no
additional structure is required between the purlins, below the roof sheathing.
If you have any additional questions, please give me a call at 222 -4453.
