Tim Blackwood and Brian Leach represented Carlson. When we arrived, we met with the Duncans. At the time of our meeting, the building was generally complete, except interior non - structural work such as painting. We walked the perimeter and interior of the building to look for any signs of building distress. Our observations of the visible portions of the foundations and all the exterior walls (masonry block walls) noted no cracks, areas of settlement, or other signs of distress or unacceptable performance. We also observed no such features in paved and parking areas, which extended around the building on the north and west sides of the building. We also observed the slab -on -grade floor and interior column footings. Our observations of the column footings did not note any indications of cracking, settlement or other signs of distress. At the time of our observations the flooring had not yet been installed and the concrete slab was generally free of cracks. However, in the south approximately 1 /3 to '/a of the building, there were some cracks that extended outward from at least two of the interior column footings. There were also two or three other cracks that crossed the floor between joints, but that were not associated with the interior columns. There was not any significant offset associated with the cracks we observed at this time, so they are most likely not related to the soil settlement. Mr. Duncan stated they used a different concrete supplier in this portion of the building, that it was poured at a different time than the rest of the slab, and that the cracks showed up right away. This also suggests the cracking is not related to the soils. We also discussed excavation of the footings for the structure. CGT visited the project on several occasions during footing excavation. These visits were not individually documented, but, in general, footing excavations were 18 to 36 inches deep as documented in a follow -up field report by Brian Leach of CGT, dated April 19, 2000. However, along the west side of the building, Mr. Duncan indicated that the footing excavations were at least 4 feet, and as much as 5 to 6 feet deep locally. Brian concurred with these depths. Mr. Duncan stated that crushed rock was compacted in lifts to a well -keyed state in the footing excavations. Brian indicated that he observed the compacted rock on a part-time basis and that, at the locations he observed, the rock was well -keyed and suitable for foundation support. Based on our observations and discussion with the Duncans, the building does not exhibit indications of settlement or other soils related problems and appears to have been constructed in general accordance with the recommendations of our geotechnical report and follow -up memoranda. • Field Observation Report Duncan Building August 21, 2000 Page 2 of 2 Our reports pertain to the locations observed at the time of our visit only. CGT engineering associate, Brian Leach, arrived on site to review the completed excavation for the proposed foundation at the above referenced project. The excavation for the footings extended down between 18 and 36 inches. The subgrade soils at the bottom of the excavation consisted of a hard, brown, gravelly silt (fill). CGT probed the subgrade soils with a ' /z" steel rod. Our probing indicated that the fill was very dense to hard with the probe penetrating less than 1 inch in any area. CGT also reviewed the horizontal footing -to -slope setbacks along Fanno Creek. From our review of the forms, the proposed foundation has achieved a minimum footing -to -slope setback of 20 feet. Based on our observations and probing, the observed subgrade soils are considered suitable for support of the proposed foundation to the design bearing pressure and have been prepared in general accordance to the project plans and specifications and our recommendations. In addition the footing -to- slope setbacks are considered adequate. This report pertains to the material tested /observed within the foundation excavation only.
