C. Type I and Type II -F.R. Construction:
The fire area of buildings constructed of Type I and Type II-F.R. construction shall be the area
of the three largest successive floors.
5. MINIMUM REQUIRED FIRE FLOW FOR BUILDINGS
A. One -and Two - Family Dwellings:
Dwellings whose fire area does not exceed 3,600 square feet shall have a minimum fire flow
requirement of 1,000 GPM. Buildings with fire areas greater than 3,600 square feet shall
have at least the fire flow specified in Table A -III A -1. The fire flow requirement may be
reduced by 50 percent when the building is provided with an approved automatic fire
extinguishing system.
B. Buildings Other Than One -and Two - Family Dwellings:
The required fire flow for buildings shall be determined by the size, construction, and
occupancy hazard of the building.
1. Single Occupancy Hazard
The total required fire flow for a single occupancy hazard is determined by multiplying the
occupancy factor by the fire flow from Table A- III -A -1 (defined in sections 6 & 7).
2. Multiple Occupancy Hazard
Multiple occupancy hazard is when more than one occupancy hazard class is located in a
fire area. The required fire flow for each occupancy hazard is found by multiplying the
percent of floor area used for each occupancy hazard by the hazard factor related to that
occupancy, by the fire flow from Table A- III -A -1, that is recorded on line 6 on the front of
the FIRE FLOW WORKSHEET in the GENERAL BUILDING INFORMATION data.
Once all of the hazard calculations have been made, add them together. The total required
fire flow at this point shall never be less than the FIRE AREA FIRE FLOW found in Table
A- III-A -1 or line 6 in the GENERAL BUILDING INFORMATION.
3. Reduction of Required Fire Flow:
The total required fire flow for a building may be reduced by only one of the following
options. The flow must be no less than 1500 GPM @ 20 psi residual.
a) Flow may be reduced by 75 percent where a complete approved automatic fire
extinguishing system is installed throughout the building. The system must meet
the requirements of the Uniform Building Code, Chapter 9; be fully and
electrically supervised in accordance with the Uniform Fire Code Standard 10 -2
and monitored by an approved UL listed central station.
b) Flow may be reduced by 50 percent where a complete automatic fire
extinguishing system is installed throughout the building. The system must meet
the requirements of the Uniform Building Code, Chapter 9.
