This letter has been prepared in response to Item #1 included in your correspondence addressed
to Mr. John Miologos, McDonald's Corporation, and dated May 7, 1997. Your May 7
correspondence summarized site plan document review comments on the above - referenced site,
and Item #1 specifically addressed the request for additional information on potential
seismically- induced soil liquefaction at the 11590 S.W. Pacific Highway property. This
additional information would supplement geotechnical information contained in the Wohlers
Environmental Services, Inc. ( "Wohlers Environmental") report, "Geotechnical Engineering
Investigation" dated July 19, 1996 for the property.
Per your conversation with Mr. Terry Cravens, P.E., on May 29, 1997, regarding requested
information, the following addresses the issue of reasonable likelihood of seismically- induced
liquefaction of onsite soils at the above - referenced site.
The above- referenced site is located more than five miles from the nearest "known or suspected
fault with quaternary displacement" (Rogers, Walsh, Kockelman and Priest, 1996). In terms of
earthquake probability, the 11590 S.W. Pacific Highway property is typical of most of the
Beaverton/Tigard area. Design for an earthquake in accordance with code section 1629.2 (ten
[um percent probability of exceedence in 50 years) will result in an acceleration that is
substantially lower than that specified for a Zone 3 event (ODOT, 1995). The "Relative
Earthquake Hazard Map of the Beaverton Quadrangle" shows this site to be within Zone A, the
zone of greatest seismic hazard. Apparently this classification is based on considerations of
both liquefaction potential and ground amplification due to the possible presence of saturated
sandy layers or lenses in this vicinity.

Our site investigation, as detailed in the above- referenced Wohlers Environmental report dated
July 1996, included completion of four backhoe test pits. Soils in the upper ten (10) feet
consisted of moderately plastic clayey silts. Due to their fine grained texture and moderate
plasticity these soils have a very low liquefaction potential. Based on thegeotechnical
information developed for our report, we encountered no evidence of conditions suggestive
of a significant potential for liquefaction or ground softening at the above - referenced site
due to a seismic event. The composition and in situ density of deeper soils were not
investigated during our field activities at the site; however, if an earthquake should occur that is
of sufficient magnitude to trigger liquefaction of soils below ten (10) feet below surface grade,
the earthquake would probably be regional in nature with liquefaction impacts that cannot be
economically mitigated.
