Retaining Wall

CGT Project: G0903408
Permit No. SIT2008 -00016
This letter confirms that Carlson Geotechnical (CGT) observed subgrade conditions for the planned wall
and Carlson Testing, Inc. (CTI) performed compaction testing in the fill placed behind the wall. These
services were performed as requested and authorized by Bob Smith of Signature Landscape Care Ltd.
Subgrade Site Visit — September 2, 2009
When I arrived, a 4 to 6 inch compacted gravel foundation pad had already been placed along with the
first course of masonry blocks for the wall. To evaluate subgrade conditions, 1 test pit was made using
equipment and an operator provided by our client. The test pit was located in front of the wall, at
approximate mid- length, and extended 2 feet below the bottom -of- footing elevation. Based on digging
effort and numerous 1 /2 inch diameter foundation rod. probes, the moist, brown, silt to silty sand was
considered medium stiff to stiff. Similar probes at various locations along the wall showed comparable
subgrade soil conditions. The gravel pad was well keyed. I indicated to Bob Smith and Robert Scott
(owner) that in my opinion, suitable•subgrade conditions were present to support the wall.
•
I obtained a sample of the % inch minus crushed rock backfill from a stockpile and submitted it to the
laboratory for moisture density testing according to ASTM D 1557 (Modified Proctor).
In - place Relative Compaction Testing of Backfill
A total of 3 field density tests were conducted on September 2 and 3, 2009, as requested. The results of
the tests showed relative compaction ranging from 97 percent to 103 percent compared to the Modified
Proctor value determined in the laboratory. Results of the lab and field- testing have been previously
issued. •
•
Summary
Based on our observations and testing, it is my opinion that the subgrade soils encountered were suitable
for wall support. Results of the compaction testing showed that the minimum relative compaction of 90
percent was exceeded at each test location.
