Knapp & Associates, LLC NOV 1 9 Consultants in Arboriculture, Silviculture, and Forest Ecology UI n g(��� ISION Walnut Crossing — Homebuilding Phase Arborist Report — Initial Site Visit November 13, 2009 On November 10, I met with Jason Spence at the Walnut Crossing site in Tigard to discuss tree protection during initial phases of construction. Four lots are addressed in this report: Lots 3, 4, 6, and 9. Refer to the attached site plans for specific location of trees and other site features. Lot 3. One tree ( #9042) has been retained on the NE corner of the lot, and there is another tree close by on lot 4 ( #9066). Both trees can easily be protected by installation of chain link fence as described in the tree protection plan for the construction phase of the site. - Lot 4. In addition to tree #9066, an 11 -inch diameter Douglas -fir is growing along the boundary with lot 5. The tree protection fence location used for the initial construction will provide adequate protection for this tree; however, a slight adjustment will be needed near the SE corner of the proposed house. Lot 6. Protection fencing will be needed for the adjacent tree #9057 located on lot 5. Again, fencing as shown on the construction drawings will be adequate. Fencing will also be needed to protect tree #9067 on the adjacent property. Lot 9. Tree #9003 will have minor impacts to the root zone from house construction. The protection fence will need to be moved further south from its present location (see site plan). Tree #9004 will be adequately protected by installation of the fence as shown on initial construction drawings. During landscaping, clearing of invasive vegetation will be needed. We will discuss methods to minimize root disturbance during this operation. Also, it may be necessary to add a small amount of new soil fill within the root zone; this should be limited to 4 inches or less to avoid smothering of the roots. - - Tree Removal. Tree #9067.1, a 30 -inch diameter Douglas -fir, has lost its top since our last site visit during construction. Only a few branches remain, and the tree is not sustainable.. (photos la and lb). In addition, the clean break at the top is indicative of top decay. Generally, a sound tree will have a splintered or jagged trunk where the top is broken out. I was unable to examine the top, as it had been removed from the site. Two bigleaf maples, 11 and 13- inches in diameter are adjacent to or intertwined with tree #9067 (photos 2a & 2b). Retaining these trees while removing #9067 would be very difficult; in addition, both maples have extensive stem decay.
