Hardy Frame® Installation May 5, 2010
Concrete Preparation
A) The concrete contractor should use Hardy Frame® Templates to accurately place embed bolts, and Hardy
Frame® Bolt Braces (at 12 ", 18" and 24" wide Panels) to prevent bolt sway.
B) Hold -downs are an all- thread with 1/2" x3" x3" plate washers attached to the embed end of the bolt. Both
the all- thread and the plate . washers must comply with ASTM A 36. For Panels, the hold -down diameter
may be either 7/8" or 1 -1/8 ". For Brace Frames (and Posts), the hold -down diameter is always 7/8 ".
C) Shear bolts (at 24" Panel and Brace Frames) must comply with ASTM A 307.
D) Nail single use (HFT) or reusable (RHFT) Templates to a form - board, at locations specified on plans. At
interior footings Templates may be secured in place using stakes
E) Connect Bolt Braces and 1/2" x3" x3" plate washers at the embed end of the hold down bolt(s) with
"double- nuts" to prevent them from dropping or rising on the all- thread.
F) Footing design and determination of embed type (from Tables 29A and 29B) are per the designer of record.
G) Determine if the Hardy Frame® will be installed on concrete or a sill plate and refer to details, or the following
sections, for recommended height of bolt above finish concrete For slab conditions, if the intended installation
not known, set hold downs (and for 24" Panels, the shear bolt) to 4 -1/4 ". Shear bolts at Brace Frames should
set to 2 -3/4" above finish concrete.
First Floor Installation on Concrete
A) Hold down bolts (and for 24" Panels, the shear bolt) should be set to 2 -3/4" above finish concrete. Shear
bolts at Brace Frames should be set to 1 -1/2" above finish concrete.
B) Installation of a moisture barrier under the Frame, such as Moistop or 15# felt, is recommended.
C) Without placing a sill plate, set the Hardy Frame® over the embed bolts.
D) Place round (cut or SAE) washers and nuts on all bolts. Tighten the nuts until they are "snug- tight "
E) After framing and plumb & line are complete, place a 2x filler above the Frame to make up the height
difference created by eliminating the sill plate. Connect with 1/4 "x4 -1/2" screws through the top of the
Frame, through the filler and into the double top plates or header above. For fillers larger than 1 -1/2" net,
refer to details 26 through 28.
First Floor Installation on a Double Nut
A) Hold down bolts (and for 24" Panels, the shear bolt) should be set to 4 -1/4" above finish concrete. Shear
bolts at Brace Frames should be set to 2 -3/4" above finish concrete.
B) If the Hardy Frame® is to be installed on double nuts with a mudsill, plot the bottom plate and cut the
length to match the width of the Frame. If located next to a door opening, allow the plate to run into the
opening
C) Install a nut and round (cut) washer on each of the hold down bolts. Set the washer to be 1 -1/2" above
concrete.
D) Notch (for inspection) a 2x sill plate and place it around the nuts and washers. Confirm that the washer is
flush with the top of the sill plate.
F) After placing the sill plate, set the Hardy Frame® over the embed bolts.
E) Place round (cut or SAE) washers and nuts on all bolts. Tighten the nuts until they are "snug- tight " and
the Frame /Panel is plumb and level.
F) For installations with dry -pack, eliminate the mudsill and place dry -pack anytime after tightening the nuts.
G) After framing and plumb & line are complete, install 1/4 "x3" screws through the top of the Frame into the
double top plates or header above. Top plates must be continuous or have a minimum 8' lap at splices.
First Floor Installation on a Sill Plate
A) Hold down bolts (and for 24" Panels, the shear bolt) should be set to 4 -1/4" above finish concrete. Shear
bolts at Brace Frames should be set to 2 -3/4" above finish concrete.
B) If the Hardy Frame® is to be installed on a mudsill, plot the bottom plate and cut the length to match the
width of the Frame. If located next to a door opening, allow the plate to run into the opening
C) After placing the sill plate, set the Hardy Frame® over the embed bolts.
D) Place round (cut or SAE) washers and nuts on all bolts. Tighten the nuts until they are "snug- tight " then
complete with one full turn.
E) After framing and plumb & line are complete, install 1/4 "x3" screws through the top of the Frame into the
double top plates or header above. Top plates must be continuous or have a minimum 8' lap at splices.
Brace Frame Installation on Raised Foundations
A) Hold down bolts should be continuous from the foundation and should be set to 4 -1/4" above the finish
floor sheeting. Couplers are acceptable with approval of the designer of record. It is not necessary to
install shear bolts that extend through the floor system, as the shear transfer will be accomplished by
screwing the base of the Frame to the rim below.
B) Install a solid 4x (min) rim, pre - drilled to receive hold down bolts, in the floor system below the Frame.
PSL or LSL material is recommended to reduce potential shrinkage.
C) Following floor sheeting, plot and cut the bottom plate in the same fashion as first floor installation
D) After placing the bottom plate, set the Hardy Frame® over the hold down bolts.
E) Place round (cut or SAE) washers and nuts on the hold down bolts. Tighten the nuts until they are
"snug- tight " then complete with one full turn.
F) Screw the base of the Frame with 1/4 "x4 -1/2 "(min) screws per schedule.
G) After framing and plumb & line are complete, install 1/4 "x3" screws through the top of the Frame into the
double top plates or header above.
Panel Installation on Raised Foundations
A) Hold down bolts should be continuous from the foundation and should be set to 2 -3/4" above the finish
floor sheeting. Couplers are acceptable with approval of the designer of record. It is not necessary to
install the shear bolt at 24" wide Panels to extend through the floor system, as the shear transfer will be
accomplished by screwing the Bearing Plate and /or the base of the Panel to the rim below.
B) Install a solid 4x (min) rim, pre - drilled to receive hold down bolts, in the floor system below the Frame.
PSL or LSL material is recommended to reduce potential shrinkage.
C) Notch the floor sheeting and screw the appropriate Hardy Frame® Bearing Plate to the rim with 1/4" x
3 "(min) screws. If the rim material is 4x (vs. 6x), place a 2x ledger on the inside face of the rim, to
provide material for edge nailing of the floor sheeting.
D) After installing the Bearing Plate, set the Hardy Frame® Panel over the hold down bolts.
E) Place round (cut or SAE) washers and nuts on the hold down bolts. Tighten the nuts until they are
"snug- tight " then complete with one full turn.
F) If needed for additional shear transfer, install 1/4 "x4 -1/2 "(min) screws through the base of the Panel,
through the Bearing Plate, and into the rim below.
G) After framing and plumb & line are complete, place a 2x filler above the Panel to make up the height
difference created by eliminating the bottom plate. Connect with 1/4"x4-1/2" screws through the top of
the Panel, through the filler and into the double top plates or header above. For fillers larger than 1 -1/2"
net, refer to details 26 through 28.
Brace Frame Installation on Upper Floor Systems
A) Install a solid 4x (min) rim, pre - drilled to receive hold down bolts, in the floor system below the Frame.
PSL or LSL material is recommended to reduce potential shrinkage
B) After installing the rim, place the hold -down bolt(s) in the pre - drilled holes with a round, cut washer and
nut at the top, to prevent them from falling through the rim. Hold down bolts should be set to 4 -1/4"
above the finish floor sheeting, anchor bolts are not necessary as the shear transfer will be
accomplished by screwing the base of the Frame to the rim below.
C) Following floor sheeting, plot and cut the bottom plate in the same fashion as first floor installation
D) After placing the bottom plate, set the Hardy Frame® over the hold down bolts.
E) Place round (cut or SAE) washers and nuts on the hold down bolts. Tighten the nuts until they are
"snug- tight'', then complete with one full turn.
F) Screw the base of the Frame with 1/4 "x4 -1/2 "(min) screws per schedule.
G) After framing and plumb & line are complete, install 1/4 "x3" screws through the top of the Frame into the
double top plates or header above.
Panel Installation on Upper Floor Systems
A) Install a solid 4x (min) rim, pre - drilled to receive hold down bolts, in the floor system below the Frame.
PSL or LSL material is recommended to reduce potential shrinkage.
B) Notch the floor sheeting and screw the appropriate Hardy Frame® Bearing Plate to the rim with 1/4" x
3 "(min) screws. If the rim material is 4x (vs. 6x), place a 2x ledger on the inside face of the rim, to
provide material for edge nailing of the sheeting.
C) Set the Panel directly on the steel Bearing Plate, then install all- thread through the bottom to the
connecting member below. The all-thread should extend 2 -3/4" above the finish floor sheeting. It is not
necessary to install the shear bolt at 24" wide Panels as the shear transfer is accomplished by screwing
the Bearing Plate and /or the base of the Panel to the rim below.
D) Place round (cut or SAE) washers and nuts on each end of the hold down bolts. When attaching to a
Panel at the floor below, use 1/2" x 3" x 3" plate washers inside the top corners of the lower Panel.
Tighten the nuts until they are "snug - tight'', then complete with one full turn.
E) If needed for additional shear transfer, install 1/4 "x4 -1/2 "(min) screws through the base of the Panel,
through the Bearing Plate, and into the rim below.
F) After framing and plumb & line are complete, place a 2x filler above the Panel to make up the height
difference created by eliminating the bottom plate. Connect with 1/4 "x4 -1/2" screws through the top of
the Panel, through the filler and into the double top plates or header above. For fillers larger than 1 -1/2"
net, refer to details 26 through 28.
Notes: 1) Snug -tight is when the socket of an impact wrench stops at the first resistance.
2) Installation methods may vary due to job conditions and /or specifications by the registered Design
Professional.
