I' I i)..1 625 lives lost each year in our state and countless others affected bythe physical, emotional `�;. ��; P Y and financial toll; and WHEREAS,the City of Tigard recognizes the importance of addressing gun violence as a Ypublic health issue that affects individuals, families and neighborhoods alike; and 1�.* `;1 WHEREAS, the Tigard Police Department remains committed to reducing crime, supporting :id' Ors..... survivors and working alongside community partners to ensure a safe and thriving community for all; and ` , r .. ` WHEREAS, local law enforcement, city leaders and community organizations play a critical role -r , in identifying solutions, building trust and fostering partnerships that help prevent gun violence before it occurs; and •1 _ WHEREAS, support for the Second Amendment and responsible gun ownership can coexist .,.(r- • i with efforts to educate and encourage responsible ownership to help keep our families and \,`�"J / communities safe; and u� ,. . WHEREAS, National Gun Violence Awareness Dayis in honor of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15 ear- ._ , YY I, ` old who was shot and killed in 2013, and whose friends chose to wear orange to honor her life ;'.,,, � `+, —a color symbolizing the value of human life; and , I� i r �_ . I WHEREAS, individuals across the country now wear orange on the first Friday in June to honor ,. l I the lives of those affected by gun violence and to raise awareness about this critical issue; and ; F ,I, .I t 1: ,II• WHEREAS,this day offers an opportunity for community members of Tigard to come together, ! . . .'
