Introductions (“What are your plans for spring break?”)
Shriya gave an update on city council (no current updates)
Chloe presented TYAC missions and goals and past/future events
Tualatin YAC: 6 members, mostly seniors. Focused on mental health in past years and very focused on
mental health again this year. Therapy llamas! They volunteer regularly (annually) at the Pumpkin
Regatta with face paint and help with the stands. In the summer, they hold events and runs (‘Blender
Dash’ and Viva Tualatin)
Holiday Lights Walk– Tualatin lights walk is a drive through. Anyone can sign up and decorate their cars
(more community-based with participation). They did face painting, hot -cocoa and other treats
Where does Tualatin YAC meet: Tualatin park (city building)
school participation: attempt to reach out to middle school (Hazelbrook, Tuality) and/or have booths at
their lunches. They don’t do a lot of school events (they do do the club fair though as well as “welcome
to the pack” night for eighth graders, they do some things during lunches to gain membership). They’re
reworking their website to make their application more visible.
Mental Health Event: recap, info given to Tualatin YAC (hopefully they can come!). Flyers passed out for
everyone.
“How does mental health outreach/stigma look at your schools?”
Usually do a pretty good job, different dynamics are interesting from different schools (Tigard seems to
do a decent job, OES seems to downplay seriousness, Catlin has stigma, Kai’s online school has a lot of
concern for its students and offers many stress management courses (sounds like they help as well!),
Fowler makes it out to a joke or tune it out (the students do, the school itself does a lot of presentations
on it) Tualatin kids also treat mental health like a joke (people don't treat it seriously, so getting people
to participate actively and enthusiastically is difficult). Some schools don't even have events for mental
health (they have a place called The Den that is stigmatized for using seriously, and is treated as a
hangout spot and abused by some students)
LEAP is holding a mental health fair in May (Tualatin YAC is going to partner with them. They are going
to have resources at booths, speakers, food). We’d like to know more! They’ll print some flyers to put
around schools (and share pdf with us)
We might get more budget for merch!! (maybe maybe)
Farmer’s Markets!! (every other week from beginning of May to end of October). Alex will share out the
dates (9am to 1:30pm)
If I Were Mayor contest entries are due by Sunday!!! Some TYAC members are submitting entries 🙂
Bye everyone!
Concluded: 6pm
