Our “Meet the Team” guest was Joe Bailey, Confidential Executive Assistant in Administration.
Joe has been with the Library team for only a week and a half. He spoke about his time with the
City of Tigard before his role at the library, and his time with Whole Foods before that.
Joe enjoys working with people who have a passion and love for the work that they do, and this
has been a great fit at the Library.
5. DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Our Technology Room Open House (technically in June) went well!
Two ceiling fans were installed in the Community Room to help circulate cool air.
Joe Bailey is our new Confidential Executive Assistant!
Lisa Henke (Circulation Library Assistant) will retire after over ten years of service at the
end of this month.
Dre Dictor (Youth Services Supervisor)’s last day is Friday, June 14th. Dre thoughtfully
guided our services, collections, and programs for our youngest patrons. They also
supported our Youth Services team, helped with PIC issues, increased the browsability of
our Juvenile Library of Things, and helped to launch our new Seed Library!
Ledja started a temporary assignment in Adult Services in her capacity as a Senior Library
Assistant. During her additional hours in Adult Services, she will work on special projects
and cover extra desk shifts.
Technical Services teammates covered approximately 57 hours at service desks to assist
other divisions.
Our summer teen volunteers will soon begin their service at the Library. We have a new
track in our program this year: the “Whybrary” sessions are designed to deepen
participants’ understanding of the library’s mission and values. These sessions will connect
library tasks like weeding, creating book lists, and displays to the broader field of
librarianship.
The Tigard Community Seed Library launched on Monday!
What is it? A seed library promotes local food resilience, biodiversity, and
sustainable gardening by “lending” (giving) seeds to community members to
grow in their own gardens and providing an opportunity for folks to save seeds
to “return” (donate) to contribute to the seed library’s continued success.
Where is it? The seed library will be housed in a four-drawer card catalog on the
counter in the 2nd floor AV Lounge, to the right of the checkout machine.
How does it work? The seed library will operate on the honor system, with no
library card or staff checkout required. Each person may take up to 5 packets of
seeds from the seed library per month and will tally the packets they take on a
sheet next to the seed library so we can keep usage statistics.

Over 700 kids, teens, and adults signed up for Summer Reading at Tigard Public Library in
the first week the program was open. Community members of all ages can sign up and
complete the challenge through August 31, and everyone gets a free book for signing up.
We continue to partner with other city departments, contributing to citywide work such as
offering climate action informational programming and participating on the proposal
review committee for equitable engagement.
People of all ages still love Star Wars (111 attended) and Free Comic books (172 got free
comics)! The Repair Fair was a hit (70 got items repaired), and the English Conversation
Group continues to meet weekly (36 attendees throughout the month).
Library Youth Services teammates connected with nearly 1,000 students during TTSD
school visits and other outreach in May. They will continue to visit schools and events to
promote Summer Reading and library services through the end of the school year and
throughout the summer.
A YouTube user left a comment on the Library video “The Spindly Man by Stephen Graham
Jones - Read Aloud:” “I really enjoyed the story and want to thank you for this engaging
read aloud. I have a hard time focusing on reading and I had to read this for class, so this
really helped me. Your voice was perfect for the story. Thank you!” The video was part of
one of the Library’s “Storytime for Grown-Ups: Tales of Terror!” series that has been
recorded each of the last three Halloween seasons.
Chair Ristau asked Library Director Bernard how the Board could learn more about funding for
the Library. Library Director Bernard offered to present more information on this topic at the
September 2024 Board Meeting.
Board Member Stoffel asked if there was a way to watch the recording of the City Council
Meeting discussion of houselessness this week. Library Director Bernard offered to send the
video link and timestamp information by email to the Board.
Board Member Michael asked about the unhoused community around the Library, City Hall, and
Police Department grounds. Library Director Bernard spoke about ways that the City was
exploring various options to meet the Council’s goals of addressing houselessness.
6. NON-AGENDA ITEMS
Board Member Stoffel moved to cancel the August Library Board meeting. The motion was

Library Board meeting August.
