At 6:30 p.m. Board Chair Bogert called the meeting to order. 2. Board Chair Bogert called the roll. Approve Library Board Minutes of June 14, 2023 and July 19, 2023 Board Chair Bogert moved to approve the minutes from June 14 and July 19, 2023. Board Vice-Chair Ristau noted that Library Director Halsted Bernard was present at the June 14 th meeting, but this had not been recorded in item 8. Board Chair Bogert proposed that the previous minutes be approved with this amendment. All members were in favor. 5. Ice Breaker: Your favorite life hack 7. “Meet the Team”: Rocío Goodey, Confidential Executive Assistant 8. Statement of Support Follow-Up: Library Director Bernard brought the statement of support to the meeting that all board members had signed and asked the board members how they would like to proceed with the statement. Discussion ensued, including publishing the statement on the City’s website, sharing the statement on social media and in the Books & Bits newsletter, and presenting to City Council. Library Director Bernard mentioned that she will be reading the Banned Books Week proclamation and suggested that a board member read the statement of support as well. Board Member Ristau and Hawkins committed to attend. 9. Director’s Report New Library Board members: Library Director Bernard reported that the mayor is interviewing all Library Board candidates who will join us in January 2024, and she will update the board as that process continues. Grand opening for the holds lockers pilot project will be on Tuesday, Oct 3 rd. The Outlook invitation will be sent by Rocío Goodey to board members. Library Director Bernard shared more about the locker pilot: TPL was selected as a 2-year pilot for the holds lockers. Any patron with a WCCLS card can use the lockers. They will be accessible during all hours the Library’s lobby is open, which is during all Library open hours, plus an hour before the Library opens, Mondays-Fridays. Opportunity Café: A new vendor has been selected for the Opportunity Café. There will be a celebration for Israel on Monday, September 18 th, at 4:30pm, and soon we’ll have a new vendor. Teammates and volunteers: Rocío Goodey’s first day was September 11th, and the Library has also hired five new on-call Library Assistants in Circulation. 10 new adult volunteers completed Circulation training and have started shifts as shelvers, bin sorters, and cart sorters. We have added two donations processors, a book sale manager, and a board member to the Friends of the Library. Native garden: Temporary garden map signs are up, showing which native plants are planted and where. Once the weeding is near completion, we will be adding mulch for the fall/winter months. Trainings: Library teammates have embarked on Total Tyler training – learning how to use the city’s new software that will launch in October. Safety procedures: Mike Lueck (Emergency Services Coordinator) hosted an Emergency Response Team meeting to go over emergency evacuation procedures. Summer programs: Library Director Bernard shared summer program numbers and successes. She shared statistics for the summer reading program completion and program participation. Upcoming library administration items: Library Director Bernard shared some information about Banned Books Week. All WCCLS libraries will be participating in Banned Books Week during the first week of October. Our library will have a display and book lists to inform and engage patrons. Board Chair Bogert volunteered that she’d read an article about the ALA statistics on book bans and lists of banned books that have increased from the past to the present. Board Member Hawkins shared that his high school celebrates Banned Books Week and that it is very effective to get kids to read. 10. Other Business Board Member Hawkins said he appreciated the summer programs. His daughters participated in the improv night and Lotería, and they enjoyed it very much. Board Vice-Chair Ristau reminded the board that Violet has sent out an email asking for volunteers to use the lockers to pick up their holds, to help the Circulation team gather data on the program. 11.
