Meeting #2
November 28, 2023
Purpose
Identify gaps that exist in City services that directly impact underserved
communities, centering Tigard’s communities of color and immigrant
communities.
Equity Commitment Declaration
WE will ensure just and fair inclusion where all can participate, prosper, and reach their full potential.
The City of Tigard is dedicated to doing the right thing by ensuring dignity, respect, and inclusion for all, and our
mission, vision, and community promise embrace equity as central to all we do. We aim to create a community where
every person feels a sense of belonging, regardless of any individual identity. Our commitment to equity means that
we work to eliminate the barriers that prevent people from accessing decision -making processes and addressing social
and economic disparities.
We recognize that championing equity entails a focused initiative to address systemic challenges tied to race and
color, while fostering a culture of inclusivity within our workspace and the broader community. Therefore, we are
resolute to continuously monitor and improve the racial diversity representation of our workforce, ensuring equitable
access for all employees, and promoting diversity and inclusion in the greater community.
We believe diversity and inclusion are essential components for creating a thriving city. Our mission is to ensure that
everyone in our community is empowered with the necessary resources and opportunities they need to flourish. We
hold firm that every person has inherent value and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. We will continue
to strive towards this promise and commitment every day.
Prompt for identifying gaps
Fill in the sentence:
The City of Tigard does not have/is not doing _______________ which impacts the
community/specific unserved community by _________________.
Example:
The City of Tigard does not have multi-lingual way-finding outside of City Hall which
impacts non-English speakers by making it difficult to know where to go and makes
it challenging to access services.
Ways to think about it…
Think about…
…times when you were not served by the City
….times when you were served well by the City, but this could have been because
you had unique knowledge or a relationship that aided you
…anecdotes from friends and family in and outside Tigard about City government
…local and national narratives and news stories
…what if scenarios (we’ll break these down together as a group!)
