WANTED MAN SAFELY DETAINED AFTER 3-HOUR STANDOFF
A man went to jail on several charges after a lengthy standoff in Tigard Saturday
evening.
On Saturday, November 12t", the Tigard Police Department was contacted by
Newberg-Dundee Police with information that a wanted man was believed to be in
Tigard. This man, identified as Worth Briggs IV (DOB 10/14/1968), had a felony
warrant out for his arrest from the Oregon State Parole Board for 15t Degree
Attempted Kidnapping.
Shortly after, Tigard officers located Mr. Briggs parked at the 7-11 on 99W and Hall
Blvd. Officers gave him commands to put his hands up and told him he was under
arrest. He did not get out of his car. In the minutes that followed, he backed into a
patrol car, ran over spike strips, drove in reverse in the parking lot, hit an
unoccupied SUV then struck a utility box which caused a power outage for several
businesses in the area that lasted for hours.
Mr. Briggs remained barricaded inside his car in the parking lot, and additional
assistance was requested from two Washington County interagency teams, the
Crisis Negotiations Unit (CNU) and the Tactical Negotiations Team (TNT). After
communicating with Mr. Briggs for more than three hours, he was safely detained.
As a safety measure, Hall Blvd was closed from 99W to Hunziker Road during the
standoff.
He was taken to jail on his outstanding warrants, as well as additional charges of
attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, hit and run vehicle/property
x3, criminal mischief x3 and resisting arrest. We'd like to thank CNU and TNT for
their assistance at the scene, along with Forest Grove Police for their drone
deployment.
