Tigard Public Library Closed Sunday, June 19 Tigard Public Library will join many other organizations across the country in closing on Sunday, June 19 in celebration of Juneteenth. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It honors the memory of June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers rode into Galveston, Texas and read President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation to the public. President Lincoln had signed the document on January 1, 1863, but it took another two and a half years for news of freedom to reach the nearly quarter of a million enslaved people in Texas. Juneteenth offers each of us the opportunity to acknowledge hard truths from U.S. history, celebrate the liberation of the enslaved ancestors of many Black Americans, and work together to advance racial healing, equity, and justice. If you're interested in learning more about Juneteenth, our friends at WCCLS have created a list to read, watch, and listen. View the full list and place holds here.
