In Honor of Juneteenth 2022 - June 19, 2022 J• • r r� � r ' = City of rid r In Honor of JUNETEENTH 2022 K JUNE 19, 2022 I WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, declaring the slaves in Confederate territory free, and formally abolishing slavery in the United States of America; and WHEREAS, notification of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation was delayed 2'/2 years to June 19, 1865, in reaching authorities and African-Americans in Texas and the Southern states; and WHEREAS, June 19th has a special meaning to African-Americans, and has been L , celebrated by the African-Amehcan community for over 150 years; and xa , a WHEREAS, June 19th has a special meaning to Black Americans, and has been celebrated by the Black American community for over 150 years; and a: WHEREAS, Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery and recognizes the high price Black Americans have paid for civil rights, and the importance of ensuring Black Americans have equal access under the law in housing, education, health care and criminal justice; and WHEREAS, the Tigard community is enriched when we are sensitive to the challenges and experiences of Black Americans and use that knowledge to eliminate institutional racism in all its forms. Y1 , NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the City of Tigard City Council does hereby proclaim 19- JUNE 19, 2022, as JUNETEENTH in Tigard, Oregon. Let this day be an opportunity for the city and its residents to acknowledge an important period in our shared history that shaped and continues to influence our society. Let us continue to celebrate our continued commitment to build a culture of inclusion and acceptance.
